UCLA entered the tournament broken down like I haven't seen them before under Cronin--having lost the previous 4 games after leading all of them at halftime. Lost to USC after they hit a buzzer beater 3-pointer--their one lead of the game. Blew it against Oregon State in the opening game of the conference tournament. They looked like garbage in the first half. But they kept chipping away and got their first lead with about 5 minutes left. When they had to go into OT, I was expecting a collapse, but it didn't happen. No other UCLA teams of recent years would have done that. I just hope that Johnny Juzang is able to play against BYU.

Oh yeah, and Izzo yelled and grabbed a player on the court at halftime, as they were walking into the locker room. Telling that all of the non-college basketball fans I saw on Twitter were pretty bothered by that, and Charles Barkley and some others laid the blame on the MSU player for turning away as Izzo was screaming in his face. Kenny Smith said that both were at fault, but you could tell that he thought Izzo was more in the wrong, but didn't want to say that. Asked about it in the post game presser, Izzo laughed and said something like "well, I guess this is how it is now, you feel the need to ask about something like that and try to turn it into an issue."

First time since I was an 18-year-old Senior staying home from school to see my high school's Donell Lumpkin playing for Rutgers against Arizona State.

Hope the 30-year-wait will be worth it. Or I'll see you again when I'm 78.

Good game so far. 16-15 and already a ton of lead changes.

30 years ago I was a high school senior with a, uh, fever or sore throat that I tended to get on a Thursday and Friday in March....watching the greatest player from our high school, Donell Lumpkin, in the tournament. We choked a 7-point lead, and now watching RU lose this 11-point lead I was ready to pack it in for another 30 years.

This time....no fear, all hustle, making the stops on defense. I mean lawd we sucked for soooo long. And now we don't.

First win in the tournament in 38 years.

So happy I stayed up. It's 42 minutes past midnight here.

jason voorhees my elderly neighbor played football for Rutgers in the early 60s and he often tells me of the 1961 season when they were undefeated and were offered the bluebonnet bowl, but the university president was a cheap bastard and refused it. Go Rutgers, go!

Three okie teams still in the mix. Love it that UNC, UK, and Duke are out of it.

jason voorhees - I have an equally surprised seller of tix to Lucas Oil for the Rutgers game. I assume you can't make it...

UCLA looked solid against BYU...but instead of having to face a #3 Texas we need to go up against another private Christian school that showed up, #14 Abilene Christian. Taking nothing for granted against them.

Yes, caja-dglh, but it will be hard to get a flight from Asuncion to Indianapolis for 14 hours from now. But should they make the Final Four....

All my best to him, Cal. That's a true Rutgers story right up there with any Rutgers story. Unfortunately, they've uh, overcompensated since then. Literally.

Sister Jean was 98 when she saw her team reach the Final Four, now is 101 to see them in the Sweet Sixteen.

You never want to be a #1 seed against a recent mid-major Final Fourer in my book. Or you never want to be Illinois.

A really exciting day with a lot of upsets and games decided late.

I didn't watch a single college game during the season, but my go-to method for picking a winner except during years when there is a wire-to-wire powerhouse is to pick the team that was the top team for a long time, faded in the middle, and had a bit of resurgence late. My friends who watch a lot of basketball tell me Michigan is that team, so I've bot them winning it.

Gonzaga are undefeated and have a number of wins over top ten teams from other conferences

How are they not a "wire to wire powerhouse"?

I think the weak conference hurts them and I say that having done my BA at a school in that conference. It's not like a Duke or UCLA or Kansas sitting in the top spot all season after beating a lot of other big teams. They did beat some top teams looking at their schedule, but those games were early in the season.

The Mike Tyson of college basketball for me was 1990-91 UNLV, who played in a somewhat goofy conference and only played Kansas and Oklahoma out of conference when they won it all in 1990, and lost them both.

Zaga played 4 tournament teams and beat them all, including #1 and #3 seeds.

They'll obviously have to win it, but if they win it all - especially with double digits - they'll certainly earn that title.

As we see, there's a lloooooooonnnggg way to go. As UNLV found out in '91, give a coach like Coach Vampire a week to prepare vs a day and it's a whole different story.
