Janik, are you going to start your usual slam-specific thread now the main draw is out? I see Evans' notional R3 opponent is Nadal. Notional mens' semi-finals of Djokovic v Thiem and Nadal v Medvedev. I wouldn't bet against that being the actual semi-finals line up.

To think last year's Aussie Open specific thread was about something as piddling as wild bush fires.

Except that actually it wasn't, in fact wasn't at all, much to my surprise as noted in the OP of this thread.

Contrast Djokovic with what Nadal said about quarantine:

"I think Australia is an amazing positive example on how to make things the right way, to control the pandemic, so many congratulations to the country. Last two weeks have been great honestly, of course it is not ideal to stay 14 days under quarantine but that’s the way we need to do things today."

Even if Nadal feels the same way as Novak, that is the only acceptable response. In other words, "we're fucking lucky that everyone is pulling out all the stops to ensure we get an opportunity to earn this money and win another Grand Slam, not to mention the money players will get for just showing up in Round 1."

Splitting this up and leaving the dedicated thread for on court issues only (sort of like the Football TV match watching ones), what Satchmo says above is further emphasised by the tournament continuing whilst the regular population of Melbourne goes into a strict 5 day firebreak lockdown. If someone tournament associated gets it, and the local lockdown is therefore extended, there is going to be hell to pay.

That said, the players themselves were a low consideration on why the tournament is happening. Fans, TV, income, those were surely the main reasons for doing it. Some of which has now been lost. The players were merely neccesary, and prime beneficiaries of this.

Sounds like a potential song title for Australia's most famous rock band. [Edit: damn, I had to edit that. Thought they were from Melbourne, turns out not.]

Murray follows up his defeat in a Challenger final with a first round defeat in his first main Tour level tournament for a while.

You have to wonder if he will ever get back into the top 50.

Yay! Sir Andy wins a match. First round of Rotterdam, against fellow wild-card Robin Haase. Next round will be more challenging, as he is likely to face legendary 15th century icon-painter and current world no.8 Andrei Rublev.

We didn't note that Francesca Jones got her first full tour win, did we? Well, she did. It came at a logical but unusual event organised by the WTA on the other courts at Melbourne Park which were free during the second week of the Aussie Open. The field was a bunch of players who had been knocked out in the first week of the Slam (which included Jones, obviously), who had already done the quarantine. Jones beat 11th seed Zheng Saisai, before losing to Patricia Maria Tig in R2. Katie Boulter also played, but was unlucky to draw eventual champion Daria Kasatkina in R1. Just as she had the week before in the Slam! Same outcome both times - straight set losses.

Rublev too good for Murray in his current state, sadly. But a respectable scoreline for a match against a top ten opponent. Lost 7-5, 6-2.

Watched most of the Monterrey Open as I had a few days off. Laylah Fernandez, the 18 year old eventual winner, looks like she could be something special in the future if she can sort out her service throws (she throws it about ten feet in the air, meaning that any wind completely throws her off for the first few service matches). Ann Li impressed me too.

Evans beats Djokovic at Monte Carlo! Best result for a British player since Muzza was winning trophies.

6 out of the 8 women's QF-ists at Eastbourne (a "500" event) are from countries which were part of the USSR: Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Estonia and 2x Latvia. (The "Kazakh" is a sports-renationalised Russian but of course that doesn't affect the ex-USSR count.)

Just wanted to say a simultaneous well done and bad luck to Emma Raducanu who made her first Challenger Level Final in Chicago this week, kicking off her run with a victory over the No.1 seed. She lost in three tight sets but will go into the Top 150 ahead of US Open qualifying.

There are six British women in the opening round of the US Open women's qualifying competition, two of whom (Raducanu and Dart) just scrape into the seedings as seeds nos. 31 and 32. Others are Burrage, Boulter, Murray Sharan and Jones.

Apparently Djokovic is far from being an outlier on anti-vaxx stuff amongst elite tennis players. Tsitsipas, Svitolina and Sabalenka are also refuseniks, amongst plenty of others:

Edit: as already posted by Rogin on a more relevant thread, oops.

Is Osaka going to be in good enough mental shape to do herself justice in the US Open?

I don't think that anyone who has followed her this year expects her to win.

She went out to Teichmann in the Round of 16 at Cincinnati, which is a decent measure of her current form on a similar surface.
