US Sports Boycotts In Protest Against Police Shootings

Several sports have experienced boycotts yesterday and today with more to come. These have been discussed on the NBA thread but I think the momentum is enveloping US sports as a whole now (maybe even world sports) so I feel it needs its own thread. I wonder what the boycott can achieve and whether it will be accused of being too piecemeal; for example, if tennis players boycott the minor tournaments but the US Open continues as normal, how would that look? Will authorities try to guilt-trip boycotters by pointing to the economic damage sports are already suffering due to COVID?

These are strikes rather than boycotts, no? The players are on strike. A league can't boycott itself.

What position are the players' unions taking?

They are strikes, but are widely described as boycotts here

The unions have been supportive, but have not had time to adopt formal positions

The "boycott" thing is just weird. Why is that word being used?

I find it reflective of how ignorant a huge number of USians are about anything to do with labour relations

Though some people seem to believe that one cannot strike against an employer who has expressed support for the cause

I suspect it's to make the athletes look like privileged elites deciding not to do their job while ordinary shlubs have to do theirs.

Naomi Osaka brings the strike to individual sports.

I should have described them as strikes in the OP. If Snake wishes to change the title, I'm agreeable.

Kushner is right, as far as what he actually said goes. He's saying it in bad faith and is a piece of shit, but it does occur to me that if the players just quit, a whole lot of their support personel who don't make much money will be shit out of luck. I hope they consider that.

                        I suspect they will.

Yes. These are what, at one time, would have been referred to as wildcat strikes.

Strikers don't tend to quit, that would seem like an error.

Reports that the NBA players have agreed to resume the playoffs, but expect some concrete steps from ownership to come out of ongoing talks.

Tonight's games have been postponed, but the games could resume as early as tomorrow, depending on what comes out of those talks.

It doesn't get a lot of publicity, but the WNBA players have really been the leaders in using their voices and taking a stand. They aren't famous, and they aren't earning anywhere close to what the NBA or other athletes do, so it's even more of a risk that they are taking.

The NHL players and coaches who played last night are saying that they were just so in their own world that they didn't know what was happening until just before their game and they said they thought it was too late to change course. That might be a bit of a post hoc justification, but it fits with what I suspected. Hockey players tend to be a bit out of it in the best of times, but especially during the playoffs.

The NHLPA is talking about taking tonight off.

The owner of Real Salt Lake said he's disappointed that they boycotted and claimed they should have played for the community and then somehow wedged in that he's going to have to layoff a bunch of staff. Jozy Altidore said "Sell the team, we'll buy it." Apparently he's part of a group making an offer. Other ex-RSL players and some Jazz players told him to fuck off as well.

The cost of postponing an MLS match that wasn't going to have more than 5,000 fans anyway must be pretty minimal, I'd imagine, but he's claiming it's the reason he has to fire 50 people and not have any fans at the remaining games. Really? Like this midweek fixture in the middle of the apocalypse was going to turn the tide. I don't know if he's really anti-BLM so much as just pro-finding-an-excuse-to-can-a-bunch-of-people-and-somehow-look-magnanimus-doing-it.

Some players are pointing out that it was the MLS Players and not the League that decided not to play last night. I may have missed something, but I never got the impression from anyone anywhere that the the owners or the league was taking credit for the boycott. Of course it was the players. The league announced it was postponing the games, which is technically true, because it is their decision to reschedule and it wasn't a long statement.

Indeed, they seem to be more plugged in, which isn't surprising given that they live more like normal people than NBA players.

I'm kinda amazed the WNBA is happening. I'd think that all of those players could just go play in Europe the way so many women's soccer players are. Or maybe they can't get a visa? Is women's basketball not happening in Europe?
