Lancs spectacularly trample on their own wicket if the responses to this tweet are anything to go by -

As is well-documented in this thread:

some of us prefer to use cash and this is another step forward towards credit/debit card dictatorship.

I may be half-joking but those comments are on the ball.

It turned out it had also hired a local media consultant to design the teams, build a website, distribute press releases and promotional material, and forged a series of emails from officials at Sri Lanka Cricket that it used to persuade service providers to carry its streams and live scores. It had also ordered boxes of new kit decorated with fake logos and sponsors, leased an internet connection, set up three cameras on a five-second delay and roped in two commentators.
It still sounds better than The Hundred.

The sheer commitment to the grift is impressive. It goes way beyond the fake press releases and website central to the Adrian Shankar story.

              From the wires:

              Hundred

Wanted to share the below news story with you for consideration to go live tomorrow.

The Hundred - a new 100-ball cricket competition will tomorrow. announce an unprecedented collaboration with BBC Music Introducing to bring live music back to England and Wales including the likes of Lady Sanity and The Orielles.

The partnership will see sport and entertainment collide on a scale never seen before as world-class cricket and a strong line-up of live music fuse to create one of the must-see events of the summer.

              [ ...]
              • After a year of cancelled live music festivals and gigs, The Hundred is will offer live performances at each of its 68 games courtesy of BBC Music Introducing.
              • Music artists have had the majority of their planned performances cancelled in the past year and The Hundred poses a new opportunity for them to get back out in front of their fans this summer. Fresh talent that has come through the regional BBC Music Introducing platforms including The Orielles, Lady Sanity, Rachel K Collier, Jerub, Oscar and Welsh will be performing at their respective local ground with more acts to be announced in the build-up to the competition. Thanks to broadcast partnerships with BBC and Sky, performances will be enjoyed by fans at home as well as those in the grounds.
              • Further cementing the music credentials of The Hundred, a local BBC Music Introducing DJ will be embedded into each of the eight new teams, each curating a unique soundtrack, reflective of their city and the people, players and artists within it. The music on offer at each game is designed to bring fans right into the action and will all be live. From walkout music to game reaction sounds, the venue DJs are in full control of the sound of their team. The confirmed DJs are:
                • Kishan Bodalia @ Birmingham Phoenix
                • Jess Iszatt @ London Spirit
                • DJ Roesh @ Manchester Originals

I have to say that, for me, until now, it was indeed the music credentials of The Hundred that had me doubting it as the pinnacle of the sporting calendar. And the presence of a local DJ has undoubtedly eased those fears.

Bancroft has dropped the bowlers in the shit, leading them to issue a denial that appears to be a lie (how could you not know that the ball was being scraped in your buddy's pocket, especially now Bancroft has admitted their knowledge was "obvious"?)

Meanwhile the Ashes next winter is being compressed into around 6 weeks, which strongly favours the home side, being able to replace knackered quicks.

He's not said anything outrageous. CA were all to happy to do a cursory investigation and limit the damage to three players. They also got to draw a line under a lot of Aussie unpleasantness with an incredibly severe punishment.

I'm sure there is a phrase or term for where you punish one or a few for the crimes of many but I can't think what it is.

No, not that. That, and things like scapegoat or whipping boy have a sense that the party punished is innocent. But in this case they were guilty, but were heavily punished because everyone was guilty.

We use "carrying the can" in this context on occasion.

I think that it is.important to keep in mind that Smith and Warner were in fact culpable to a greater extent than the others.

                                That's much more like it.

Oh yes, Smith and Warner were much more culpable for this incident. But there was a degree in which they were being punished for the mental disintegrators etc. of the past as well. There was a lot of turning over a new leaf talk in the time afterwards.

                                  Oh yes

One of the issues here was that the "inquiry" was primarily used as a way of settling scores and mollifying interested parties (particularly politicians, sponsors and rights holders (recall that this was in the middle of the renegotiation of television contracts), rather than any genuine attempt at determining what happened.

Foxton vs Eaton Socon in the third round of the Village Cricket Cup. Bloody freezing out, it is.

Got there when Foxton were 86-8 and in terrible shape. But the 9th wicket pair put on 44 and then the number 5 batsman got 22 off the last over to bring the final total to a better 151-9 (and his score to 70*)

The overcast skies and strong wind obviously made batting difficult and after a reasonable start Eaton Socon collapsed to 91 all out. So Foxton march on to the final of the Cambridgeshire - Norfolk section

Lovely photo, nicely framed by the leaves, with the batsman in mid stroke (it could be a "spot the ball" competition). Bucolic image only slightly lessened by the digital scoreboard.

The Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy (women's domestic 50 over competition) starts tomorrow, with games streamed live for free I believe.

Another day of hot village cricket action with Foxton's spin heavy attack today laying waste to Stamford. Anyone aware of the relative sizes of the places (Foxton-insignificant village, Stamford-sizeable market town) will realise this feels a reasonable scalp. Obviously the Lincolnshire team were unused to the traditional crumbling dust bowl turners of South Cambridgeshire.
                                                  Foxton 223 all out
                                                  Stamford 101 all out

(To be fair to Stamford, I'm not sure that the Foxton team is drawn entirely from the village. It certainly is a lot more diverse than the village is)

As it was Sunday I went to Church - the village on the outskirts of Accrington. Lovely sunny afternoon with pleasant views of the countryside including Pendle Hill in the distance. The home side built a steady if unspectacular innings, reaching 208-5 after the last two in put on about forty in the last three overs. East Lancs opener Joe Bolton scored 34 but got absolutely no support from the rest of his team - seven failed to score as they collapsed to 48 all out. Philip Gilrane was the pick of the Church bowlers, taking 4-2.
