Con O'Callaghan gave his victory speech for Ballymun as Gaeilge yesterday - a small gesture, but the individual clubs will be better able to promote the language than all the various Government schemes:

Dublin player Dermot Connolly announces his retirement from inter county football at the age of 33. One of the most naturally talented players I've ever seen, he was always hampered by a hair trigger temper that opponents found easy to exploit.

As things stand, the intercounty season is due to resume on Saturday, with Round 6 of the Football League, but Fermanagh have already lost half their squad due to Covid, and Division One sees one current hotspot in Kerry travel to another in Monaghan. Still, with only two rounds remaining, the competition will likely be completed, even if the Championship remains 50/50 at this stage.

Kerry would be favourites for overall honours, being at home to Donegal, who have nothing to play for, and the Ulstermen face Tyrone the following week. Dublin seem best placed in the event of a slip-up, with Galway recovering from last week's humiliation against Mayo, and the Green and Red could yet build on that victory, and relegate Tyrone. Roscommon are poised for a swift return to Division One, but Cavan could easily throw a spanner in the works, and the other promotion slot is a lottery. Fermanagh have been relegated, and Laois seem likeliest to join them in the drop.
Cork and Down have escaped the third tier, and Louth descend to the basement tier - due to Covid, Leitrim are almost certain to join them. Anyone's guess as to who will ascend from Division Four, but Wicklow playing Wexford opens the door to Limerick and Antrim.

Sadly, Richmond won the second half by a cricket score, and it finished 81-50. As expected, Donegal ran the changes, and Kerry won their 21st League title at a canter, but their defensive structure has greatly improved, and Gavan White and Tony Brosnan delivered stand-out performances. In Division Two, Roscommon sealed the title and promotion with victory over Cavan, who fall to the third tier, and Armagh secure their first top-flight appearance for some time by defeating Clare. Wicklow ascend to Division Three thanks to success against Wexford, and the Model County lose out altogether after Limerick win today.

Dublin get the All-Ireland Hurling Championship underway with a 14-point revenge mission against Laois, and earn themselves a rather daunting Leinster semi-final against Kilkenny, who appear revivified given the recent exploits of Ballyhale Shamrocks at club level.

I caught some of the Dublin - Laois match on a sport channel after the Giro had finished. It's changed a bit. Most of the "action" seemed to be someone running up to the halfway line juggling the ball like in an egg and spoon race, then walloping it over the posts from 60m out. They never used to belt it that far, did they?
