I'm really enjoying watching Remco Evenepoel at the moment. Could he actually win the Giro?

(Usual caveat about assuming the race even happens of course. The Tour's beginning to look a bit wobbly again)

Very enjoyable watching the return of top cycling. I always enjoy Strade Bianche but this one was more star-studded and very full-on from the start (such that lots of big names were behind by the time the coverage started). Not a frakkin’ Ineos jersey in sight by the end, which was also nice.

I've seen some photos on social media of events at outdoor velodromes in Fiorenzuola Italy and Aarhus Denmark that appear to have crowds allowed. I thought in the former at least they wouldn't be allowed yet, does anyone know the situation there?

The Italian track is allowing a limited number of spectators, provided that they a) provide COVID self-certifications, b) maintain social distancing, and c) wear masks inside the velodrome
This must have been cleared with the local authorities and it is no doubt significant that Emilia Romagna's numbers have been low recently

I’ve only just looked at the calendar- I knew the Tour dates and gleaned a wee bit on here but there’s some intriguing race/date matchups that could go badly wrong weather-wise.
The other thing is the grand tour v ‘spring’ classic clashes which will probably hit giro and Vuelta participation

Unspeakably horrific crash at the end of a downhill sprint at the Tour de Pologne, with Groenewegen putting Jakobson into the barriers at full speed.
Jakobson is in an induced coma and has been intubated. A race official is also in serious condition.
Groenewegen has been disqualified, but Lefevere is calling for him to be prosecuted.
Don't watch the clip if you haven't prepared yourself. It is horrific.

I saw it a bit earlier. Still think that's the worst finish crash I've ever seen. Groenewegen wants a long ban from the sport for that, that was completely unacceptable in any sprint. He knew damn well what he was doing there.
This race has a poor level of safety in general, they're always creating incidents like this. What the fuck are they doing having a sprint finish on any sort of downhill? It really needs to be removed from the World Tour until the organisers get their shit together.

One of the things I'm enjoying about this season is how normally sleepy races are suddenly attracting stellar fields and heightened interest. Excellent example of this in the Tour de l'Ain which starts tomorrow. Normally this takes place in mid May and is an opportunity for French teams to fill their boots. This year it's managed to become a major Tour warm up in Bernal / Thomas / Froome versus Roglic / Dumoulin / Kruiswijk along with Aru, Porte, Mollema, D Martin and Quintana. Similar situation at the Tour de Wallonie next week, usually a little noticed event in the week following the Tour de France, this year they're hosting nine World Tour teams and the pick of the Pro Contis.

Very much agreed
Deceuninck-Quickstep's Fabio Jakobsen is out of his medically-induced coma, two days after suffering a violent crash on stage 1 of the Tour de Pologne in Katowice but the extent of his injuries are such that his recovery process is expected to be 'long and arduous', according to the team.

Complete agreement with longeared's post upthread. I used to like Tour De Pologne but I didn't know the riders had actually been complaining about that finish for some years.
Today is for Milano-San Remo, which I understand has some enforced route changes due to paranoid mayors, or something?

The tour of Szeklerland is coming through my village in a couple of hours, on this year's final stage. Pictures from this morning's mountain time trial are here https://sportfotopress.zenfolio.com/...F7kYOMXZGqDfFE

Meanwhile, in Poland

After displaying Jakobsen's race numbers she crossed the line, Evenepoel broke down sobbing in the arms of a soigneur

As per the Tennis thread, what happens to the rescheduled Tour de France on today's news? Like the French Open that was planned for September, presumably with more than half-an-eye on the restriction on gatherings of >5,000 ending at the end of August as planned. But that is now not being lifted until the end of October...

Janik, it isn't expected to have a real impact on the Tour, which will proceed along the same lines (with crowd restrictions at the start and finish and limited publicity and sponsorship events) as did the Tour de l'Ain and the Cit?rium de Dauphin? (which started today). Similar restrictions were already in place for Paris-Nice, which was the last race before lockdown.
