Regarding the Ronay article also being discussed on the South Africa v England thread, the only arguments in favour of 4 day Tests are commercial; all the arguments about the actual cricket favour staying with five days. If we switch to four, we have to maintain different record books on run chases, draws, etc, for the two formats because they'd be comparing apples and oranges, just as you can't meaningfully compare ODI records from today with those of the 1970s-80s ODI greats.

You'd even have to pick different players. Sibley suddenly looks unsuitable for 4 days despite his heroics over 5. Spinners become redundant as there is no such thing as a 5th day pitch.

I think 4 day tests are a bad idea, but I think you're overstating the difference Satchmo.

With regards to statistics, we use the same ones to cover three day tests (which is a lot of the 19th Century tests), tests with and without rest days, timeless tests, tests with four ball overs (common in the early days), tests with eight ball overs (most tests in the Southern Hemisphere between WW2 and 1979), tests with covered and uncovered wickets, tests with and without video evidence, tests before and after substantial changes to the LBW law. I think several of these were more significant than this change, given that a lot of tests already finish inside four days. Groundsmen are able to prepare three and four day pitches for first class games, I'm sure they can change their preparations to test pitches so that they deteriorate a bit quicker.

Simon Harmer never seems to struggle to take wickets in four days.

I quite like the flow of the four day matches in the Championship but Test matches are another level, and a fifth day where the result is not certain always feels like a special occasion.

I now need to know what percentage of tests go into a fifth day and if the stats have altered over the years.

Well.... there have 'only' been 2379 Test matches in history, so you could always have a look through the scorecards...

Scroll down to the bottom of each scorecard to see the match status at the end of each day's play...

(Or you could email the statistician... http://www.howstat.com/cricket/AskTheExpert.asp)

I didn't realise that we had some six-match series right up until the late 1990s.

Ireland's second ODI in the West Indies starts in about 15 mins (on Skeh). They won the toss and elected to bat first.

Things tailed off for Ireland after Porterfield and O'Brien were dismissed but a nice flourish at the end from McCarthy means West Indies need 238. Should be an interesting chase.

West Indies are three down and below the RRR. The upset is on...

Pooran's and Pollard's efforts have got the RR up high enough but the Irish bowlers - led by Singh - have the West Indies seven down after 30. Squeaky.

Oh my word, just saw a low quality video of the final over.... There was a mis-field / failed run out on the ball before Cottrell smoked the winning six. Ireland will be kicking themselves over that.

I watched the Windies bat today - comfortable win behind a century from Evin Lewis. Looked him up, any reason why he's never played test cricket?

He's always been considered a white ball player, and a T20 specialist at that.

He has also played for at least half a dozen different T20 franchises in various places, so has not always been available for selection (though he may well not have been picked even if he was).

The Windies' Jason Roy, perhaps? Except England were so desperate for Test openers that Roy actually did get the call last summer...

First of three India v Australia ODI matches in about 7 hours. Is it just me or does the Warner, Labuschagne, Smith sequence seem out of place in a white ball team?

So Cummins bowled an incredibly testing over, including a couple of bouncers (one of which was called a wide) and tempting Kohli to play outside off with his hands away from his body. Really nice bowling. Then Zampa comes on and floats one down, which Kohli creams away for a six. Second ball, much skiddier, caught and bowled. The captain is gone, Wankhede is stunned and India are floundering.

Australia need 255. They took the tenth wicket with the first ball of the final over. Quite the performance from the bowling unit, must have been some time since India were up against it like this at home.

Bumrah is playing apparently. But he's proving no more effective than the rest of India's attack so far.

Australia need 51 from 19 overs with 10 wickets remaining with Warner having just got his ton and Finch in the 80's. Think they might just edge it.
