Depressing article about the University of Texas receiving pressure from alumni and big money donors to back away from any criticism of "The Eyes of Texas," their fight song. The song has its origins in a quote from Robert E. Lee and was first played in minstrel shows. Some players decided to walk off the field at the end of games as the song was being played, something that outraged some. As a way to protest "cancel culture," some donors said that they would cancel their donations if the song wasn't fully defended by the university president, who seems to want to have it both ways by keeping the song but not doing so proudly. An idea of what the letters were like:
"UT needs rich donors who love The Eyes of Texas more than they need one crop of irresponsible and uninformed students or faculty who won't do what they are paid to do," Steven Arnold, a retired administrative law judge and UT-Austin law school graduate, wrote to Hartzell. When reached for comment, Arnold said he had not donated to the university in recent years and has been completely turned off of college football after the events of the last year."It's time for you to put the foot down and make it perfectly clear that the heritage of Texas will not be lost," wrote another donor who graduated in 1986. Their name was also redacted by UT-Austin. "It is sad that it is offending the blacks. As I said before the blacks are free and it's time for them to move on to another state where everything is in their favor."
"I know this much," Sarkisian said, "'The Eyes of Texas' is our school song. We're going to sing that song. We're going to sing that proudly."

Woah
It increasingly looks like Texas and Oklahoma are going to join the SEC, which will stick in a fork in the Big 12 (reducing it to a Little Eight) and set off another round of consolidation, with the most likely outcome being three or four 16 team "super conferences".
