I suppose he’s never going to coach in college again so he might as well try to get a settlement.

MSU’s leadership is a bit of a mess right now so I don’t know who will decide when to settle.

But overall, I imagine they’re all pretty pissed off about all of this and do not want to give him a dime.

One more Saturday of happiness, then Ohio State.

Without knowing too much about their back story other than their rise through the divisions, I'm liking James Madison's start to the season, caught the end of their game after watching Kentucky's win. Duke v Notre Dame is past my bedtime unfortunately.

They didn’t really “rise through the divisions” in the European sense.

          That’s not how it works.

JMU is a big school and successful in non-football sports. so they were sorta punching below their weight when they were in FCS.

They chose to move to one of the lower leagues of FBS. The main difference is that they have to offer 85 scholarships instead of 60+. ODU did the same thing, except they went from not having football at all to FBS in a short time. I’m sure both programs are losing money hand over fist, but they decided it was worth it in order to raise the profile of the school and appease donors.

It helps both of them that UVA and VT have really gone downhill in football. The ACC just doesn’t offer much TV money and they haven’t kept up with the SEC or B1G. That’s why Maryland moved to the B1G when they got the chance.

Another public university that doesn't make that obvious.

            USC have no defence.

It went co-ed in 1966 but didn’t have football until 1972.
It expanded very rapidly in the late 20th century.

Penn State played horribly and still covered the spread vs Northwestern. Offense couldn’t get going, but the D handled things well enough with six sacks.

I find the Virginia public university system to be especially opaque

Yes I know they don't have promotion amd relegation, but was using the term as shorthand for JMU being, as far as I know, the only programme to have played in all three levels of FCS and then FBS.

They have, at least briefly, played in every NCAA division, but it was not long. I’m not sure they’re the only one, but maybe they are. Perhaps thats what you meant.

FCS doesn’t have three levels. Not officially, anyway. There are de facto subdivisions within it because some schools don’t offer the full allotment of scholarships they could. The Ivies don’t offer any athletic scholarships. And HBCUs are their own thing. But JMU wasn’t any of those.

According to Wiki, shortly after the NCAA split the lower “College Division” into D2 and D3 (early 70s), JMU started playing football as D2, then they were in D3 for a year (not sure why they went backwards briefly. Perhaps so they could schedule enough local opponents).

Then in 1978, the NCAA split D1 - formerly known as the University division - into D1AA and D1A and soon thereafter, JMU joined 1AA as the whole schools athletic program joined D1. (FCS/FBS only applies to football).

More recently, D1A and D1AA were simply renamed FCS and FBS. But it means the same thing.

JMU is one of a few teams to recently jump from FCS to FBS, but they’re in a so-called “group of five” or “autonomy five” league.

Red River has been good, with Cal's boyz on top by ten in the third quarter

                                    I can dig it.

Still gotta get that running game going. Relying on the QB (who isn't named Hurts) to be your leading rusher ain't good.

Texas seems to think their ascendance is inevitable. And perhaps it should be, since they are the flagship institution for the biggest state that cares a lot about football.

But aside from the Vince Young era, I can’t recall a time in my life time when they were as good as they ought to be.

                                        You are correct.

They've had some seriously great athletes but rarely put it together for a complete season.

I get the impression that their boosters are more of a hindrance than a help sometimes.

It looked like Arizona could get the upset, but that was a mirage. I suspect USC will run away with it and win by 20. Arizona keeps shooting itself in the foot.

The refs in this game don’t seem to know what the hell is going on.

The end of the GT-Miami game is hilarious. Look it up. All the better because Miami wore their dumb black “Miami Nights” uniforms.

Or maybe not. USC’s defense isn’t good. 28-28.

                                              These refs are terrible.

OT. USC had it first and goal with lots of time. Ran three bad plays and then totally fucked up the kick attempt.

Stanford was down to CU 29-0 at half.
                                                  They won 46-43 in OT,

I’ve never seen such consistently poor tackling.

Stanford ran the same slant play on almost every play.

It was like a high school game.
