I know Root has been well below his best (for a couple of years now) but he's still got over 300 runs this series. I wouldn't make him captain of this composite side but I'd still put him in it. He might have to bat at 5, or worse, open, to make way for Labuschagne and Smith, mind you.

Someone would have to keep wicket so Paine would probably survive as specialist keeper + captain. Burns might have done enough as opener and you could have Stokes just as a batsman.

When the series stats are finalized, Smith and Labuschagne really are going to be the difference between the teams. Australia's bowling attack would have had no runs to play with otherwise. The others are averaging around 20 per player so Australia would only get around 400 per Test from their 20 wickets.

The composite team of the series might have 9 bowlers, Smith and Labuschagne.

The composite team of the series would have about seven bowlers in it.

Rogin, averaging 100+ in a series is exceptional, but not freakish. Smith has done it before, of course, in an Ashes series, and Cook did it in 2010-11. So even in recent Ashes history it's not unprecedented.

Joe Denly gets in a composite team of the series as an opener. That's how bad the Australian openers have been. In fact, you could easily make the case that only four Aussies make a composite team (Smith, Labuschagne, Cummins & Hazelwood) on pure stats, though Lyon would get in too to balance the attack.

Smith needs another 15 after lunch to guarantee an average of 100 for the series. Phenomenal. How frequent is it for a batsman to average 100+ in a 3-match or more series? We have to include 3 match series to be fair as Smith will only have completed 7 innings in this one.

    Three rabbits as openers.

There is a comprehensive database of Test statistics that can provide all kinds of insights if one is adept at writing queries.

There have been fewer Test Matches in all of history than there are MLB games in a single season.

I would guess that Warner gets one home test or maybe two.

I think the fact that Harris and Bancroft have both failed repeatedly (plus 21 test centuries) mean he'll get another series.

Are Australia going to drop him or give him the home series against Sri Lanka to try and get in some kind of nick?

Just saw on Facebook that Warner has set a new record: the first time an opening Test batsman has failed to reach double figures eight times in a series.

Archer bowling wonderfully this morning. Broad a little off, oddly.

Looked like a clear gap. Heard a feint sound on the replay but no idea what that could have been.

Mitch Marsh getting his five-fer was very sweet.

Edit ; ah, cross-post with RobW - clearly conflicting sentiments too!

All out for 294. Marsh finishes with 5 wickets. Utter wankers.

He could get a pair in this test and still average 95.9 for the series.

I’m off to this in the morning (£105 for a ticket, ffs!). Looks likely we could be watching Smith bat nearly all day, but I’m hopeful we’ll see him get a duck instead and ruin his series average.

England should declare now and knock over the Aussie openers before the end of play.

3-1 it is then. 2010-11 in reverse

Australia are only going to have to bat once, aren't they.
