Oh, and Barty started the match against Riske with four straight aces, apparently. She is the second female player to do that this tournament - Kvitova managed the same at 0-2 down in the opening set against Mladenovic. Talking of which, Konta and Kvitova are on court. I'm happy to see either in the Semis, so come on Tennis. But not Tennys, he's a pillock. One who, sadly, has just won a set two breaker against Querrey to level up at a set all. C'mon Sam!

Pliskova serves for the match against Muchova, falls 0-40 down, comes back to deuce, loses the next two points and is broken back. Now 5-5 in the fifth.[/facepalm]

Ah, thanks. His girl is a set up, as I'm sure he will be glad to hear eventually.

A footnote on scheduling: I think the women who play singles today get any doubles they are still in pushed back to tomorrow, e.g. Serena, Barty, Strycova, Mertens. That may be another advantage of last 16 all being done on Monday.

Halep to serve for the match against Gauff. She is unlikely to pull a Hercog.

Muchova-Pliskova is 9-8 (on serve) in the third. The first 12-all deciding breaker is beginning to loom.

Halep wins 3&3. See you next year, CoCo. And the one after. And after that, etc.

Konta just blew a 15-40 chance at 4-4 against Kvitova and now has to serve to stay in the first set at 4-5.

                Muchova-Pliskova up to 9-9.

The Bryan brothers are still playing in the men's doubles. I think their first Wimbledon was on Pathe Newsreel.

Pliskova breaks Muchova to lead 11-10. She immediately falls 0-40 down on her own serve. FFS, Karolina!

Broken to love. That is twice she has failed to serve out the match. Momentum all with Muchova now.

And now she is 0-40 down at 11-12...

Saves two, but not the third as she double faults. Muchova through to the QFs, and seeds 1-5 are all out of the Women's draw before the last eight. Petra Kvitova is now the highest seed left...

Yes, the women's final is going to produce a big story one way or the other. Halep could actually win it now.

Muchova's celebration and apology was a nice touch, after winning the match on a lucky trickle over the net.

Bottom half of the Women's draw now reads Svitolina, Muchova, Halep, Zhang. The odds on that line-up pre-tournament... Halep the strong favourite to make her first Wimbledon final. Barty winning Roland Garros and Halep doing so at Wimbledon would just sum up the unpredictability of the Woman's game at the moment!

For the 99.9(99)% who don't, then yes, becoming a world class player and winning one of the main titles is your only route. And if you are Tim Herman, falling a little short of that but having a semblance of the background works. He is the right sort of chap.

Basically, think the Augusta National but with British rather than American class context.
Even if you're very rich, you'd have to get four current members to support you. I'd think it would be easier to become the best tennis player in the world. Maybe that's hyperbole.

Apparently, it's not really very expensive. (Augusta, I think, probably costs five figures a year in dues) But there are fewer than 400 members.

You just appoint them to the board of your company. Just like Augusta.

                                          8 points later, it's still 2 points away. Progress = 0, stress = major

Two match points came and went in that game. Kvitova broke on her fourth bp.

And then a very rapid hold to love for Petra. Konta now has a very uncomfortable 90 seconds on her chair thinking about the next attempt to close it out.
