What? ANOTHER World Cup? Snooker Wuxi 2019

Yep, Snooker is getting in on the international tournament fest this summer with its own competition in Wuxi, which Eurosport are covering (unfortunately it doesn't look like Quest are).

So how can this possibly work then? Well, there are 23 countries entering a pair of competitors, with hosts China permitted to enter two such teams. In the group stage, matches are played as a best of five (and all five frames are played even if you go 3-0 up). So if you have teams 1 and 2 each with players A and B the frames are 1A v 2A, 1B v 2B, 'Doubles', 1A v 2B, 1B v 2A.

There's four round robin groups of six teams, top two go into the QFs. Everything I've read suggests the ranking is based on frames won first of all, and not number of matches won.

If there is a tie in either of the first two places the following rules determine the positions:
    - If two teams are equal, the winner of the match between the two teams will be ranked higher.
    - If three or more teams are tied, a sudden-death blue ball shoot-out will be played.

Teams tied for position 3 to 6 will remained tied and share the prize money for those positions.

During the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and World Cup Final, the eight qualifying teams are paired off in a head-to-head knockout. The format for these matches is a best-of-seven frame competition with the match ending as soon as one team wins four frames. These encounters are scheduled as two singles, a doubles frame, two reverse singles, another doubles frame, and a deciding singles frame if necessary.

This page seems pretty useful to keep track of things. Note that the times are CEST.

And this is the list of players copied off the Wiki page. There's a notable absentee from Australia - and no Trump or Selby either, come to that.

Oh yes, and it's a very quick tournament too. There are 67 matches to be played and the final is on Sunday!

What's a sudden death blue ball shootout?

The blue ball will be placed on its spot and the cue-ball must be struck from on or within the confines of the D. Players have alternate attempts and the first player to make an unequalled pot will win the frame. The blue must enter the attempted pocket at the first attempt, i.e. flukes are not permitted, even if the ball finally enters the originally attempted pocket.

There's an example here but the heckling annoys me.

China A not taking any prisoners in their opening match with Germany, winning the first three frames. But then the format demands that they don't let up, and should try to win 5-0.

Final frame the longest of the match. Surprised they didn't go for the re-rack here:

Ha, obviously the effort of taking the screenshot helped... Kleckers is in amongst them now.

edit - and promptly misses a straight black.

Always good to see Malta at things like this - snooker has always been big over there, a legacy of British rule no doubt. One of the Aussies is called Mifsud, he'll be Maltese as well.

Yeah, that's good to see and nice that they have a post-Drago generation there as well.

Meanwhile this frame is still going!

Norway have beaten Thailand 3-2 in something of an upset - the two Thai players are around the top 30. Straight into the next match on that table with HK vs England.

Meanwhile the final frame is down to pink and black, with Germany ahead by 12 points.

And Germany get one on the board to avoid the whitewash.

Poland v Austria is still only in the fourth frame. It started nearly two and a half hours ago.

Cheung Ka-wai has Lisowski in a spot of trouble here, and takes the second frame. All square, time for the doubles.

That's not much considering they're playing best-of-sevens. At the Home Nations tournaments they get through 120 matches of the same length in the first four days.

Shaun Murphy has been participating in regional qualifying for the Open today. He shot 12 over and will go no further. Might be advised to concentrate on his snooker given that he's currently ranked 32nd on the race to the Crucible and has already lost to Zhang Anda in Riga Masters qualifying.

Blimey. How many tables do they use at those? This world cup is three at a time.

England came back to win their first match 3-2 but Cheung Ka-wai looks a handy young player. Ireland lost to Iran in a match that makes you think perhaps snooker is more global than I reckoned.

England 2-1 up on Ireland after the doubles. Now Lisowski takes on Doherty.

Group D is going as expected, with China B and Wales opening up a gap after two matches. They will play each other in the final round of group games but will probably be safely in the quarter finals by then.

                                      8-2 China B
                                      8-2 Wales
                                      6-4 Switzerland
                                      4-6 Malta
                                      3-7 India
                                      1-9 Australia

There's still one frame in progress of one of the group B matches but whichever way it goes (Looks like Saudi will beat Iran but need another red or two to make sure) the group is going to look tight.

                                        Edit - and they did.

                                        7-3 Northern Ireland
                                        6-4 England
                                        5-5 Iran
                                        4-6 Republic of Ireland
                                        4-6 Hong Kong
                                        4-6 Saudi Arabia

Malaysia v Cyprus went down to the final black with scores 65-65 in the fifth frame and two frames all. Close game then! It was Malaysia who took the win and the cleaners move in at speed to get it ready for the group A match.

Group C is looking a bit of a two-horse race after two rounds of matches:
                                          8-2 Belgium
                                          8-2 Scotland
                                          5-5 Israel
                                          4-6 Malaysia
                                          3-7 Cyprus
                                          2-8 UAE

Only one more round of matches to be played in Group B now.

                                            14-6 England
                                            12-8 Hong Kong
                                            11-9 Iran
                                            9-11 R Ireland
                                            9-11 N Ireland
                                            5-15 Saudi Arabia

The key game tomorrow is Iran v Hong Kong. England just need one frame to make sure of their quarter final place. Results of England 0-5 Northern Ireland and Iran 3-2 Hong Kong would give us four teams on 14 frames. And according to the rules I think we would end up in a blue ball shootout. I suppose a 5-0 whitewash of Saudi Arabia by Republic of Ireland would also get them to 14 and perhaps that's not as far fetched.

Group D is waiting for the conclusion of Malta v Australia which, improbably, is still in the second frame. The other two matches in that group have already finished with Wales and China B picking up 5-0 wins. Not that the other match has any bearing on the next round, since China B and Wales are comfortably through. They face off for top spot tomorrow.

                                              18-2 China B (Q)
                                              17-3 Wales (Q)
                                              6-14 Switzerland
                                              6-14 India
                                              5-10 Malta (match in progress)
                                              3-12 Australia (match in progress)

If those 2 results happen and Ireland beat Saudi 5-0 there'd be 4 teams on 14 frames.
