    Quick question for German speakers

Schaufele. I leant today that's some kind of roast pork dish? Came top (alongside currywurst) on a "meals to try in Berlin" list someone had put on Time Out.

Now there's an American golfer called Xander Schauffele - doing very well, he's about fifth in the world. His name doesn't mean "roast pork", does it?

No, Schaufele apparently means shoulder blade.

Which is the part of the pig used for the dish (which I think of as being from Baden, it isn't native to Berlin)

Yeah, if a noun ends in -le, you can assume its from Baden, Swabia or possibly Bavaria.

So the golfer is called "pork shoulder"?

Schaufel means shovel - Schaufele (the _le is a diminutive like -let in piglet or -ling in darling) means a little shovel and thus a shoulder blade.

Don't know if that's a reference to the way his forefathers played golf

Well, football in the north east had / has Alan Shoulder.

And German football had Bastian Pigclimber (and of course, the kaiser himself, Franz Bowlbuilder).
Whereas Phil Cabbagewriter's parents pushed him towards a tennis career.
