Dublin's Drive for Five? GAA 2019

The inter-county year cranks into full gear once more this Saturday, with the return of the National Football and Hurling Leagues - as ever, Dublin begin as unassailable favourites in the former competition, with Tyrone and Galway seemingly best placed to challenge for springtime honours. Mayo remain in transition, while Kerry will use the competition for experimentation, under new boss Peter Keane.

As for hurling, Limerick's September success stunned neutrals, while Galway, Cork and Wexford will all be in the mix for honours.

    NFL Division One:

    Cavan
    Dublin
    Galway
    Kerry
    Mayo
    Monaghan
    Roscommon
    Tyrone

Cavan and Roscommon were promoted last spring, and both appear favourites for a swift return to Division Two, though Kerry may be in danger due to the absence of players in club duty.

    Division Two:

    Armagh
    Clare
    Cork
    Donegal
    Fermanagh
    Kildare
    Meath
    Tipperary

Fermanagh and Clare are likeliest to be relegated, and while Donegal and Kildare should go up, Armagh could spring a surprise.

    Division Three:

    Carlow
    Down
    Laois
    Longford
    Louth
    Offaly
    Sligo
    Westmeath

Longford would be contenders, but for club championship matches - Down and Laois should be promoted, with Louth and Offaly falling to the basement.

    Division Four:

    Antrim
    Derry
    Leitrim
    Limerick
    London
    Waterford
    Wexford
    Wicklow

Derry should win the division comfortably, with Antrim and Wexford battling for second.

      NHL Division 1A:

      Clare
      Cork
      Kilkenny
      Limerick
      Tipperary
      Wexford

Clare appear to be performing well in pre-season, winning the Munster League, but Limerick abstained from the competition, as did Tipp. Wexford also impressed in Leinster, and will be keen on a top two finish.

      Division 1B:

      Carlow
      Dublin
      Galway
      Laois
      Offaly
      Waterford

In a rather weak section, Galway should be clear favourites, with Waterford close behind. Carlow, Laois and Offaly all play in the Joe McDonagh Cup, but of the three, Offaly may well be the side ultimately relegated.

Monaghan give hope to everyone with a 3 point win over Dublin ,Kerry's young guns beat Tyrone, Galway ease past Cavan by two and Mayo beat Roscommon by a single point.

And given the Monaghan win last year came when the Dubs had already qualified for the final, it's their first meaningful defeat since the 2017 League final. Not the most free-flowing game in Killarney, but the Kerry backs were far better organised than last year, and Dara Moynihan could well be this year's breakthrough star.

As for the hurling, Limerick eventually prevailed in a fiery encounter in Wexford, Kilkenny eventually eased past Cork at home, and Offaly's woes were brutally exposed by a 27-point shellacking at the hands of Waterford.

Didn't see that Offaly result, they have gone backwards so badly in both codes from the 80s and 90s when they were one of the top dual counties.

Yes, that's a hurling final score - incredible result by the Leinster men. Elsewhere, Limerick continue where they left off last year by beating Tipp and Clare defeated Kilkenny.

In football, Dublin swiftly overcame their "crisis", comfortably defeating Galway, while Kerry secured a hard-fought, but crucial, victory in Cavan, and Mayo are surprisingly comfortable against Tyrone.

Carlow GAA have been putting a lot of work into the underage game and it's paying off, particularly at hurling. They're an inspiration to all the small counties who moan that they can't compete with the big teams.

Shows the value of the Joe McDonagh Cup, too - Kerry and Westmeath hoping to make similar progress this season.

Kerry manager, Peter Keane, gatecrashes the Kerry supporters' bus:

Just back from the match in Tralee - very high standard for League football, and very encouraging to see Kerry go toe-to-toe with the Dubs for 70 minutes, even after they emptied the bench. Still somewhat premature to be thinking of All-Irelands yet, but full marks from the first three games is a useful starting point.

Kerry look like serious contenders even though Peter Keane is talking them down, Dublin still a work in progress, the defence is badly missing Philly Mc Mahon's influence and organising skills and Evan Comerford doesn't look like being the new Cluxton, which is a pity cause I'm friends with his dad!

Gobshite of the week has to one of the Roscommon forwards (I didn't catch his name). After an exciting game which was level in the last minute of extra time the Rossies won a free right in front of the posts. Their chance to win was lost when the aforementioned gobshite decided to charge into the Tyrone goalkeeper, the referee reversed the decision and correctly gave a throw up (Gaelic football's hop ball) which Tyrone won with the last touch of the game. As expected Roscommon weren't happy but there's too much "hard man " stupidity in Gaelic football and it's good to see it properly punished.

Limerick give Kilkenny a 9 point hammering in their own ground, unheard of (Kilkenny are the Real Madrid/New York Yankees of the hurling world), Wexford beat Tipperary by a point and Galway beat Dublin.

Ordinarily, Waterford v Galway would be a shoot-out for promotion, but the GAA are undertaking a predictably convoluted restructuring of Division One based on finishing positions. However, there will be relegation from 1B, and the new few weeks will see a straight battle involving Carlow, Laois and Offaly to avoid the drop, the last-named suffering another costly defeat to their Midlands rivals.

An unusual occurrence in a Gaelic football match - play stopped due to an umpire injury (temporarily unconscious).

Kerry grind out a one-point victory over Galway, but their reward is a two-point cushion on top of Division One, and with their next two games at home, they look good for a place in the league final, where Dublin could yet join them, given two of their remaining games are against relegation battlers. Meath and Fermanagh are the surprise Division Two pacesetters, the former last playing in the top tier in 2006, surprisingly. Only two counties have yet to win in any division, Sligo being pointless, while the only side on one point are Cork.

Some shocks in the hurling, with Limerick losing at home to Cork, and Kilkenny winning in injury-time at Semple Stadium, but the biggest upset was Dublin defeating Waterford, who had a 100% record up to then.

Kerry's match at home to Monaghan almost cancelled by a distinctly unseasonal snow shower, but ultimately going ahead.

It ultimately went ahead, and Kerry moved within a point of the League final, with a hard-fought win over the visitors - Dublin move favourites for the runner-up slot. Sligo relegated from Division Three, with Derry and Leitrim promoted from Division Four:

10 minutes ago I was going to say "bet you're wishing now it was " but it looks like the late points will be enough to see you over the line, horrible weather and dire game up in Roscommon but Dublin beat the Rossies to put us in with a shout to reach the final.
