Am I right in thinking that a team which beat NZ before the final has only once ever won another game in a WC - Australia in '91?

I don't know if we're all seeing the same TV pictures, but that shot of the trophy being engraved before full time was a kicker. "South Africa" was already on, must have started before the last try.

England blew it. South Africa were superb, but predictably good, not shocking England with some unforeseen game plan. And I know the media are not the team (if that was the case the ABs would be unbearable) but the story never really changes, does it - England sports team reaches a final, gets awarded cup before game, repeat on loop. Admittedly 90% of those "reckons" came from people who only woke up for the semi final, but still. Alan Pardew went on about it on football commentary duty last week, that was enough to have me cheering the Boks.

    Congrats South Africa, and Japan.

Yet only beat Wales by 3. What could have been...

England couldn't peak twice, just as NZ couldn't reproduce their QF form in the SF, whereas South Africa were consistently massive in scrums, mauls and defence in all three KO games, and tactically 100% throughout. The best all-round team and coach won the tournament, I would say.

That was the most "You've got to earn the right to go wide" performance I've ever seen. An absolute masterclass in that approach.

What is the highest civic honour South Africa can bestow? Erasmus is due it.

    Gatland knows.

Erasmus has done an amazing job seeing the state the Springboks were in a few years ago. Having the foreign based players back has made an impact of course.

A couple of lovely steps in that try. Can’t begrudge this at all.

Brilliant second try now. SA have dominated this game in every aspect. Maybe Gatland was right about England giving everything in the semi final and having nothing left in the tank. They've been completely flat today.

Kolbe with a lovely try. Poor tackling perhaps but he's a wonderful player to watch. Reminds me of Shane Williams and Christophe Dominici.

Did England have a longer rest here than NZ did in 1995? They had an extra 24 hours over S Africa here, of course.

    De Klerk having a stormer.

Watson's had a bad 10 minutes: conceded the penalty then this knock on. A 10 point swing, potentially.

South Africa's first ever try in a final, according to NBC. It was superb.
