    US Open Tennis 2011

Like a bus, Irish tennis players go decades with qualifying for any Grand Slam, and now two have made the opening round of Flushing Meadows.
Both have plum draws, with Wimbledon hero Conor Niland facing Novak Djokovic, while Australian Open participant Louk Sorensen (who, I thought, had retired) up against Robin Soderling. Interestingly, it seems Sergey Bubka's son (of the same name) has also qualified for the first round.

I suppose we should make something of the fact that there are more Irishmen in the draw than Brits. But then there are more Kazakhs in the draw than Brits, as well.

There were some quite winnable draws for the qualifiers, Djokovic and Soderling are absolutely stinking draws.

Drawing Djokovic is some consolation for Niland, having just missed out on meeting Federer at Wimbledon (beaten in fifth set in round one, with Federer awaiting the winner).

More importantly, we're not going to see much tennis over the next few days surely, with Hurricane Irene's impending arrival?

The hurricane has buggered off, so the Tennis can start on time. Very well behaved of it.

Kvitova, suffering substantial lose of confidence, goes out meekly in R1. She needs to take a few months off to get her head straight about the Wimbledon win.

Elsewhere, Heather Watson has taken the opening set against Sharapova and is now a break up in early in the second. She is properly talented, and Maria can be flaky early in slams, especially on serve, but it would be stunning if Watson sees this through. One strongly suspects not, Maria to grind out the 2nd and then crush Watson in the 3rd.

Watson got to within two games of the match twice, 4-4 and 5-5 in the second set, but eventually lost 6-3 5-7 3-6.
Maria is probably the last option anyone would opt for for their first top ten scalp. The toughest cookie around, she will never hand a match away, unlike Kvtiova did earlier, which is often what a player like Watson needs when the crunch comes.

A nightmare evening for Niland - at 6-0, 5-1 down, the Limerickman has to withdraw due to injury.

                Illness. Very unfortuante.

And with Clisjters unfit again and unable to defend her title, that is all reigning women's slam champs gone after by day two.

Caroline, can you hear me Caroline? It's time to step up, girl.

Apparently, he got a bout of food poisoning from what he ate on Sunday, and threw up on court before the match began.

A young tennis player named Conor
Played Djoko to save Ireland's honour.
                        Unfortunately
He had a bad tea -
Threw up and now he's a goner.

Sorensen was due to play Soderling, then the Swede pulled out, and was replaced by a Brazilian player. Louk then went two sets to one down, before pulling out with a sprained ankle.

Venus Williams withdraws, citing an unspecified illness.

Soderling's withdrawl was also through illness. If all three are food poisoning, then presumably the people at the venue responsible for the players catering are investigating with a sense of dread.

The women's competition is wide open, with so many withdrawals and early surprises. The bookies' current favourite is Serena, but my half-crown is on Lisicki at 16s. She's playing well and should meet Sharapova in the semis.

Unfortunately, the US Open is really hard to follow in Australia because of the time difference but I've just seen Sam Stosur win an epic against Nadia Petrova 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. She finally won it on her 5th match point.

18 players have retired injured so far - a grand slam record.

Surprisingly, Novak Djokovic is not one of them.

It says something when the No.1 and No.2 seeds are considered as something like outsiders. And it's not good, really.

If it carries on raining today, they'll have to reschedule th men's final to Monday, won't they? Surely they can't ask Murray or Nadal (and the other affected players) to potentially play 4 matches in 4 days?

Never underestimated the player-unfriendliness of the US Open schedulers. They intentionally play the Men's semis on the saturday and final on the Sunday, potentially ruining their showpiece by having one player knackered having played a five-setter and another relatively fresh after breezing through in three.
But yeah, this one might be beyond even them.
