    Martin Laird, then

Almost unknown in Britain, but on the cusp of winning the Bay Hill (Arnold Palmer) Invitational tonight. A win that would push him towards the top twenty in the world golf rankings, and certainly make him Scotland's number one player at present - and in America at least, Britain's most recognised golfer.

Form at Bay Hill is normally a good indication of a golfer's chances going into the Masters. I think we need to gen up a bit on who this lad is, and what he's about - he might well be slipping into a Green Jacket ahead of your Donalds, Westwoods and Poulters, and we know virtually nothing about him.

I dunno... maybe in rankings, but isnt Paul Lawrie doing well in Andalucia?

Ah, it was Peter Lawrie, and he faded rather badly... as you were.

Paul Lawrie drops into that category of "blokes who turn up in a Vauxhall Corsa with their clubs in the boot on Thursday, and on Sunday they're going home with the Claret Jug thinking 'how the fuck did THAT happen?'" alongside Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton and Louis Oosthuizen.

You were right enough, Ger, it was Paul Lawrie, he went on and won the thing.

          First win in 9 years
