CBC declines to pay royalty fees for use of Hockey Night in Canada theme song.

This is possibly the End of Canada as We Know It.

    TSN should licence it.

    Now.

Further evidence of the decline of Canada: major Canadian newspaper says NBC kicked CBC's ass in series coverage.

This was only a matter of time - CBC's bloated and self-satisfied hockey coverage is due for a major kick in the ass. It is the Milan of sports broadcasts - aging, and living on former glory.

But it's still evidence for the End of Hoser Life as We Know It.

CBC calls in a mediator for the Theme Song.

        This is getting desperate.

It's hilarious. Pure comedy Cancon, you couldn't make it up. I truly believe the Feds should by the fucking thing for a couple of billion dollars, add some lyrics and make it the national anthem. Hockey fans would get it at the beginning of every game and the CBC wouldn't have to pay a nickel.

It's funny, you know - I don't watch a lot of hockey, but I find myself quite upset at the thought of losing that song. I think it could be the national anthem.

Mind you, if we ditch O Canada, we lose the fantatstic irony of having had the national anthem compoosed by one Quebec's oldest separatist movements, which would be sad, too.

So we haven't lost it! On Ursus's advice CTV bought it for TSN.

(I hope your consultant's fee was suitably substantial UA.)

The song has a long and storied history in Canadian sports and has become ingrained in the hearts and minds of hockey fans across the country. It is an iconic tune, embraced by Canadians everywhere, and we felt it was imperative to save it.

Gramsci, that was all for "future considerations", which just may come in handy if Obama loses in November.

                      The backstory to the song.

Man, the Canadian press can just milk this for weeks...

Urs, you can get special considerations any time, regardless of how Obama does.

                            I can't wait to hear the Celine Dion entry . . .

You're going to end up with something Bob Segeresque, aren't you?

Or even worse, the Hank Williams III of the Prairies. Are you ready for some hockey?

Actually, I suspect a lot of people would plump for this corny dreck. from one of our more unlikely cultural icons.
