The lost art of American sports posters

Two great posts collecting athlete posters from the 80s and 90s: here and here.

I like the title of the second post: "Classic Sports Posters That Just Don’t Seem Real Anymore." It is almost hard to imagine something like this today. They are so elaborate, rather goofy, and awkward. I mean, Jim Kelly as a old-time gangster?

    I remember this one vividly:

The Jordan wingspan and Bo Jackson football pads/baseball bat were classic Nike ads.

This WILL NOT be a nil thread, trust me.

I recall several that, sadly, don't appear to be on the internet anywhere. My freshman roommate, from the Philly area, had a Reggie White "Minister of Defense" poster because he was an Eagles fan and a fundamentalist. I had two Wayne Gretzky posters, but they weren't quite so cheezy.

I had a number of MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL posters from the 70's, but these were just blowups (some ridiculously grainy) of athletes in action. Seemed they cost 2-3 bucks at the time.

I'll take the grainy Dick Butkus and Jack Lambert over the studio-lit LT.

A bit of a tangent, but I thought some of you might like the artwork on display at this site ...and the items themselves, too.

I have a poster of this one: But I haven't put it up yet. Needs a frame, I think.

Yes, that is something to be framed. Is it a reprint? I'm surprised that more schools don't print posters of old programs like that. I remember that we had a thread a while back with some classic old college football programs.

We had this one (which I loved as a kid):

Yeah, it's a reprint. They've done a few of those and they did a calendar with old reprints.
There are lots of people around who collect the original programs from Penn State (among other things) and some of the downtown bars have them framed on the walls.

I remember that Nolan Ryan one.

Apparently a lot of the crazier ones were done by the Costacos Brothers.

The only other sports poster I remember having (my brother had several Jordan posters, and I vaguely remember a Barkley one) was a Summer Sanders one.

Because she was a good swimmer.

I remember the "Bash Brothers" one well.

The Kevin Mitchell "Bat Man" one is hilarious. Too bad there wasn't a similar Jeffrey Leonard "Hack Man"-Pac Man mash-up.

I fancied Summer Sanders in her prime. I guess it was my prime too.
