Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

In the first chapter of our revisionist history of the Cleveland Browns (which you can read here) we determined to forge a new and glorious history of a once-proud franchise.

We began in the dark days of Tim Couch, William Green, Quincy Morgan, Andre Davis, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren et al, five years after the franchise was re-born after Modell's move to Baltimore. It was a time of disappointment as numerous high draft picks had failed to make the grade and the franchise was continually rebuilding.

Given the splendour of the history of the Browns from their days in the AAFC, and their original reputation for offensive innovation, magisterial coaching and dynamic, dominant play, we sought to restore the franchise to its rightful place in the pantheon of football - the very top.

Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

Our first step was to bring in a boatload of veteran talent to make the Browns competitive. With a veteran road-grading line and a secondary packed with wily, swift veterans, and with a coaching staff that at last got the best out of COUCH, GREEN, MORGAN, DAVIS, WARREN and BROWN, we not only made the playoffs at 10-6 our first year but even made a surprise run to the SUPER BOWL before being defeated in tragic circumstances by the PACK.

With the foundations of the new Browns laid we then began to build the team piece-by-piece. In came promising young draft picks with tons of potential and superlative physical abilities, and through free agency, established stars willing to play for a new power.

Our team only went 9-7 in Year 2 but went on a charmed and highly fortuitous odyssey through the playoffs before stunning the GIANTS in the big game. As if to prove it was no fluke the team surged to a 14-2 record in Year 3 and a second straight Lombardi trophy with victory over the 49ers.

But we were then faced with a major choice - to go with the established veterans who had brought us such success or to instead turn to the gilded young players so carefully assembled in the draft. We chose youth and so a gave debuts to a whole generation of brilliant young players.

In their first year as starters, Year 4, our new young team was eliminated from the playoffs by the established PATRIOTS dynasty. Then in Year 5 with another year's experience we made it to the SUPER BOWL before a powerful SAINTS team defeated us.

But finally in Year 6 came footballing nirvana as our superb young team, packed with superlative talent, powered through the playoffs before destroying a good SEAHAWKS team in the SUPER BOWL 77-20 with young superstar QB JARRETT BROWN throwing an out-of-this-world eight TDs.

Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

The new history of the Browns is being written through the franchise mode on Madden 2004, the finest incarnation of Madden on the PS2.

Like a true GM, I don't actually play the games, but rather make the decisions that count - the personnel decisions, draft picks and free agents and so forth. And like a real GM, I then sit back and watch the action.

Madden will play itself if you set it to, and the effect is just like watching an NFL game. That's what I do, but I don't watch all of them, just the post-season ones if and when the Browns make the playoffs. We simulate the regular season games.

Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

So we're built the team around five players we inherited as original players and turned them all into stars - WILLIAM GREEN, QUINCY MORGAN, ANDRE DAVIS, GERARD WARREN and COURTNEY BROWN.

We've also built strongly through the draft, getting our starting QB, FB, LG, C, RG, LE, LOLB, ROLB, K and P in the draft.

Please note that we name drafted players after real players they resemble in the 2010 draft.

We have used free agency to stock the positions that are tough to draft like OT and CB and to fill need slots at TE, MLB, FS and SS.

Finally - we have taken particular delight in stealing top players from our AFC North Divisional rivals, welcoming RAY LEWIS and JONATHAN OGDEN from the RAVENS, WILLIE ANDERSON from the BENGALS and PLAXICO BURRESS from the STEELERS...

Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

As I noted in the previous chapter, what is extraordinary about this team is that nearly every position has a player with superlative key attributes.

For example, QB JARRETT BROWN has throwing power 99, tops in the league. Both WRs are incredible fast and agile. Our interior offensive linemen are all strength 99. DE JARED ODRICK is strength 99, which is unheard-of for a DE. OLB ROLANDO McCLAIN is speed 98, which is completely unheard-of for an OLB. LEIGH TIFFIN and BRENT BOWDEN both have kicking power 99.

This is a team of superlative athletes with extraordinary talents.

A display of raw power from the BROWNS saw them brush aside the TEXANS 58-14, and it wasn't even that close.

DAVID CARR was brutalised by a rampaging BROWNS D, finishing 12 of 29 for 179 yards, 1 TD and 4 INTs.

Meanwhile JARRETT BROWN was more than steady, completing 22 of 32 for 342 yards and 3 TDs as the BROWNS strolled to victory.

WILLIAM GREEN blasted in for three TDs on the ground, while ANDRE DAVIS had 5 catches for 104 yards and a TD and PLAXICO BURRESS added 4 for 55 yards and another score.

The interceptions of CARR came from SURTAIN, LEWIS, BAILEY and SMOOT. CHAMP took his to the house. ODRICK notched a sack.

In the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - the 10-6 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS!

These guys have really given us a ton of trouble in every game we've played them and beat us in JARRETT BROWN's first season as a starter, back in Year 4.

                            Some REVENGE would be nice!

This could be NEW ENGLAND's last shot for a while - 35 year old TY LAW and 35 year old LAWYER MILLOY are both set to retire after this year and their secondary is very much the strength of their team...

Camelot in Cleveland - the Browns saga continues

                                10-6 PATRIOTS at 15-1 BROWNS

                                BROWNS win 31-17

7-0 Bailey 61 yard INT return
                                10-0 Tiffin 38 yard FG
10-7 Diaz 6 yard TD reception
17-7 Green 7 yard TD run
                                17-10 Vinatieri 39 yard FG
24-10 Bailey 68 yard INT return
24-17 Diaz 2 yard TD run
31-17 Green 17 yard TD run

This was much tougher than it looked as NEW ENGLAND's talented if ageing secondary clamped down on CLEVELAND's high-octane passing game and turned this one into a real slog.

In the event, the difference between the two teams was CHAMP BAILEY and WILLIAM GREEN. BAILEY snared two INTs and returned them 61 and 68 yards for TDs to give the BROWNS a somewhat fortuitous 24-10 lead.

Then when the PATRIOTS commenced their inevitable comeback and closed to within 7 with only four minutes left in the game, WILLIAM GREEN took over.

With the BROWNS desperately needing to run out the clock, GREEN started running with extraordinary power and violence. Exploding through the BROWNS line, time after time he slashed forward, every run bringing the BROWNS closer to victory and running more time off the clock.

So violent was GREEN's running on this momentous drive that he knocked two PATRIOTS DBs out of the game with severe injuries on the drive. In all the drive went 74 yards, and 62 of those yards came on runs. It ended with GREEN sweeping right 17 yards for the score to clinch victory and a place in the SUPER BOWL.

The drive will be forever remembered in BROWNS folklore and GREEN is now assured of a place in the pantheon of great BROWNS RBs alongside MOTLEY, BROWN et al.

The performances of BAILEY and GREEN saved the BROWNS from defeat, as JARRETT BROWN completed 15 of 26 for only 214 yards, no TDs and two INTs.

BAILEY was MVP with 2 INTs for 2 TDs, a forced fumble, and 4 tackles.

GREEN ran 15 times for 62 yards and 2 TDs.

PLAXICO BURRESS had 3 catches for 80 yards.

JARED ODRICK got two sacks. On the other side, RICHARD SEYMOUR gave WILLIE ANDERSON a torrid time and ended up with three sacks and two forced fumbles.

BRADY himself concluded the contest 21 of 32 for 253 yards, a TD and 2 INTs.

SB: 15-1 BROWNS vs 15-1 SAINTS

                                        BROWNS win 52-7

7-0 Burress 11 yard TD reception
7-7 McAllister 3 yard TD run
14-7 Morgan 30 yard TD reception
21-7 Rolle 61 yard INT return
28-7 Bailey 33 yard INT return
35-7 Green 4 yard TD run
                                        38-7 Tiffin 19 yard FG
45-7 Davis 42 yard TD reception
52-7 Davis 18 yard TD reception

A glorious and total victory for the BROWNS who destroyed their nemesis of two years ago 52-7 to cap a magnificent year.

Two years ago, the BROWNS knocked out SAINTS QB AARON BROOKS only for an unknown backup to come in and win the game for NEW ORLEANS. This time, CLEVELAND knocked out BROOKS again, but the results were completely different.

In a moment of some comedy, portly DT WARREN SAPP unloaded his entire weight into AARON BROOKS, instantly laying him out and bringing in untried reserve DARREN REESE. It was a cruel blow for BROOKS, who had been having a good game up until that point (6 of 9 for 72 yards). And in fact the scores were tied at 7.

To say REESE had an atrocious game would be an understatement. At one moment he had the same number of completions (four) as interceptions and had thrown three straight interceptions.

ROLLE and BAILEY feasted on two of these interceptions and returned them for TDs. In all REESE would conclude the day 11 of 28 for 130 yards, zero TDs, and FIVE INTs. ROLLE got two of them, and BAILEY, McCLAIN and SURTAIN got one each.

With the opposing QB chucking them the ball with some regularity, the BROWNS coasted the rest of the way. JARRETT BROWN completed 21 of 29 for 259 yards and 4 TDs in an MVP performance but could easily have thrown for many more yards and TDs.

ANDRE DAVIS had 6 catches for 106 yards and 2 TDs.

DEUCE McALLISTER was the only offense for the SAINTS, with 14 carries for 65 yards and a TD.

As well as BROOKS being forced out, Top SAINTS CB GERMANE WILLIAMS was also knocked out by an aggressive BROWNS team early on.

The BROWNS D not only had 5 INTs but four sacks too, with WITHERSPOON, WILLIAMS, SAPP and SPRINGS all getting in on the action.

SAMARI ROLLE had a magnificent individual performance on D, with 6 tackles, 2 interceptions, and one TD.

The BROWNS kicked off so often that special teams LB CHAUN THOMPSON, only in on the kickoff coverage, got four tackles.

Such a comprehensive victory was sweet revenge for the BROWNS, who now have won two straight SUPER BOWLs and can dream of an historic three-peat.

NORMAN was a former backup TE who had fallen to #3 at TE.
