    RIP.

A great bowler, obviously, but I remember him being at regular loggerheads with Mike Brearley over team selection during Bedser's time as Head of Selectors.

Apparently he quipped to the Queen at Buck House: "The last bowler to get one of these was Francis Drake". Ha ha, RIP.

Very dodgy right wing politics (even by cricket standards), but yes, a great bowler.

          Gleneagles? Nice golf course there.

Reading about him he sounds about as quick as Paul Collingwood, perhaps the same as Ian Botham post-op. I suppose a medium pacer like him couldn't really come again at test level- mind you they said that about legspin once. It's easy to attribute his success to pitches being uncovered in his day but he must have got a lot of good players out on good pitches.

Medium pace is very useful in one day cricket, and Bedser would have thrived there.

According to Simon Hughes, the legcutter was what made Bedser. Almost Shane Warne-like movement at quicker pace. Bradman was done by it for nought at Adelaide once and did a huge amount of practice to combat it.

That really is an absolutely brillant thread title from GO.
