    Pentti Airikkala

I find the WRC virtually unwatchable these days. The cars are almost too good and most of the drivers, with a few exceptions are either technically very good or not good enough (I'm not sure which) - meaning they are not particularly exciting to watch. The TV coverage also leaves a lot to be desired.

In the days when Pentti Airikkala was a big name in rallying, things were different. The car's were uncontrollable monsters to all but the elite, so only a few drivers really stood out as having immense driving talent. Pentti was one such driver and I used to love watching him drive.

    He died yesterday.

I lost interest in rallying after the debacle of the Monte Carlo Rally in 1966...

Very pleased to see Pentti get a mention on here - thanks TJA.

Britain's favourite Finn, I have many happy memories of watching him in the iconic Chevette HS, the Manta, Starion or appearing into view at a quite ridiculous angle in the Astra GTE. Like many British fans, I was chuffed to bits when he belatedly won the RAC in 1989 in the unwieldy Galant.
