    No World Athletics Championships thread?

The BBC, at least, has had a cracking weekend, benig able to focus on Jessica Ennis's increasingly realistic hopes of a heptathlon gold medal. Apparently she's anticipated to lose much of her current lead in the sixth event, the javelin, so it could be almost literally a straight race for the gold when the leaders line up in the 800m later tonight.

The Men's 100m will, as always, be something special tonight, as well - semis begin about 6 o'clock GB time, with the final itself at 8.30.

A local girl as well. She was one of the athletes who featured on the BBC's 'Olympic dreams' programme last year. She made a good team with her coach Tony Minichiello.

She is faster at 800m, than the women in positions 2-8. She has thrown a decent javelin, so is in a very strong position.

Bolt, Gay and Powell on at 20:35 GMT/BST/Whateva

*she has, what is effectively a lead of 12 seconds.

Usain Bolt has just run a 9.89 while jogging for the last 30m, AND causing a false start (which meant the Brit, Tyrone Edgar got kicked on the second false start.)

Britain's Tyrone Edgar has just been DQ'd in the semis thanks to Usain Bolt's far more blatant false start (in the first attempt to get the race off).

If the rules they're talking about for 2012 were in place now, Bolt would just have been disqualified himself. Still, he's run 9.89 (something like the tenth fastest time in the history of the event) by walking the last 20 yards. It was like watching someone sprinting for a bus, only to realise that it wasn't about to pull away anyway, so they stop sprinting, and end up in a fast walk, and try to look composed, and stroll on all cool like.

I think Gero should be done for a false start on OTF rules, clearly going before the gun there!

Much comment on the blue athletics track; I assume that's because Hertha Berlin play there for the majority of the year when it's not an Athletics stadium?

If West Ham end up taking on the London Olympic stadium after 2012, can we expect the lanes at that stadium to be alternatively claret and blue?

Excellent. Olive Loughlane wins a silver in the walking (20km, I think) for Ireland.

A very proud moment for the Emerald Isle. Was there a special offer on at an Aldi that she walked the 20km in record pace to get to?

Right, you can stop wittering on about the 'Sports Personality of the Year'. (to the BBC commentators)

Why do they continue to talk about 'Personal' bests and 'Lifetime' bests? Arent they the same thing? Pick one and stick to it.

Fantastic for Ennis. I'm delighted! But now for the big one. I think there's a world record on the cards. In fact, I think 2 of them might do the old World Record (but only one will, of course, win).

Tyson Gay ran 9.71, and finished second, a long way behind - and that's an almost full 0.1 seconds behind anything Ben Johnson did while on his horse steroids.

                                        Wow.

Did you see the Indonesian sprinter this morning during the heats for the women's 100m?

She was a big girl, more like a shot putter than a sprinter, and finished a long way behind the rest of the field, so that it looked absolutely ridiculous. It puts it into perspective, though, when you realise she's running 12 seconds even then.
