    The "Hofzinser" thread

You know, for bands you either think will (or just want to) make it big, but nobody seems to have heard of yet.

This is the thread you can point back to and say "yeah, see I told you so."

    So:

    Pale Young Gentlemen -http://www.myspace.com/paleyounggents

The first (short) album is great, and they are working on another.

    Hofzinger?

You make him sound like a KFC tower burger.

Try Ulterior. Power electronic industrial. Really impressively angry young men.

Also White Denim who are playing five dates in small London venues next week. Awesome band.

Saviours who are also playing over here next week. Heavy, heavy doomers who sing about wizards and shit.

This new message board is awful looking. I'm just in a bad mood because I got the first zero thread.

I think I prefer "Hofzinger" (to rhyme with humdinger) to my actual name. It has more pizzazz.

The Chromatics. They've had a lot of attention in the (mostly US-based) music blogosphere but their records have tended to seep out in the form of cottage industry CDRs and what not in the past. They're the brainchild of Johnny Jewel, super-producer affiliate of the brilliant Italians Do It Better label. Last year's Night Drive is a great, conceptually perfect album I'm hoping will get a proper release that people notice.

I'm not sure anyone knows what to do with them, though. They make dreamy, Xanax disco, a step to the side of old Italo disco records; it's well-crafted, well-produced pop music that would probably never get near the real charts, but there's something about it that really gets under your skin.

Check out In The City. Scratchy guitars like beads of perspiration on your forehead while you're cruising around, air conditioned on a heatwave night.

They've got a great line in mid-80s cover versions too: you'll all love their version of Running Up That Hill, and I surprised myself by loving their version of Brooce's I'm On Fire. Those were both on their Myspace page, but it seems to have been hacked by a some guy from Bayern who only has one friend.

Has it really always been Hofzinser? I've thought it was as the thread title for ages.

Yep, always with the 's'. You're far from the first to misspell it, though.

My submission for this thread is Montt Mardie, a Swedish guy who writes glorious soulful pop songs. I started a thread on him on the old board but it garnered scant attention.

                  (To Not Me

                  I'm listening to that now.

It's alright, but the keyboardist is a bit all over the place isn't he?

(and once again, youtube comments outdoes itself.)

It's actually a bit unfortunate that I'm linking to his mySpace just now because his very best songs - and the ones I'd play if I wanted to persuade someone of his brilliance - were on there a couple of months ago but have now been taken down and replaced.

I might care-and-share over the weekend and try and do him justice.

Edit: I thought Matej was referring to my post above.

I like those songs (Montt Mardie) well enough, but not extremely so. So would definitely be interested in hearing more.

(We probably need to set up a care/share thread soon anyway.)

One of my coworkers just recommended a Swedish band called The Mary Onettes. Anyone else know anything about them?

They got mentioned on the old board a bit. I think I have a track lying around somewhere I can post, but somebody else probably knows a lot more.

My friend's in Lovvers, who're doing very well for themselves thank you very much. The fact that their singer used to be in Murder of Rosa Luxemburg's helped their cause, but they write brilliant snotty two minute punk songs in a kinda Flipper way and are brilliantly intense live. They're currently on their fourth tour of the UK this year and recently pissed off about 1500 Biffy Clyro fans whilst opening for them.

A Good Book gives me proper tingles: I don't much like the word 'authenticity', but it oozes it! Last song on the myspace (though the others are great too):

Serafina Steer, who is a mate of a mate of mine back in London is really good but I think she's just going to be lumped as the British Joanna Newsome because she plays a harp on stage, which is a pity as they sound nothing like each other.

Serafina Steer I really like. Been meaning to check her out for a while, so cheers stevetc.

I think most people on here will be rather smitten with 'Chandelier' by Morton Valence (and anyone who's not has no heart). Great, swooning, soulful and gently epic pop music:

In an attempt to throw as much at the wall in the hope that something sticks, I will big up one more: Felix.

Sort of like Cat Power if she was backed by Loren Mazzacane Connors and on Kranky Records.

(check out 'What I Learned From TV' first, not least for the mention of Trans-World Sport).

Lucinda (singer/pianist/lyricst) is doing alright for herself with her photography too- she came second in a national competition on C4 recently (www.lucindachua.co.uk). Every single one of my male friends has spent far too long trying to chat her up.
