    Flute in pop

If anyone is interested, here's the first of at least two mixes comprising songs that feature the flute. Don't flame me for obvious omissions; I have kept a few good ones back for the second volume.

    1. Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - Winter in America (1975)
    2. Baby Huey - California Dreamin' (1971)
    3. Josh Rouse - James (2003)
    4. Bobby 'Blue' Bland - Ain't No Love In the Heart Of The City (1974)
    5. Eddie Rabbitt - Suspicions (1979)
    6. Carpenters - Road One (1972)
    7. Michael Jackson - I Wanna Be Where You Are (1972)
    8. Blackbyrds - Walking In Rhythm (1974)
    9. The Mamas & the Papas - Creeque Alley (1967)
    10. Frank Sinatra with Count Basie - Fly Me To The Moon (1966)
    11. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream (1972)
    12. The Cardigans - Sick & Tired (1994)
    13. Van Morrison - Everyone (1970)
    14. Traffic - John Barleycorn (1970)
    15. Carole King - So Far Away (1971)
    16. Simon & Garfunkel - So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright (1970)
    17. The Beatles - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (1965)
    18. The Beach Boys - Feel Flows (1971)
    19. Beastie Boys - Sure Shot (1994)

            Burning Spear 'S.O.U.L.'

I can't say I'm much of fan of this particular genre to be honest.

              Unashamed plug ..

The Wolfmen's Cecilie has a flute section in the middle, and "references" both Venus in Furs and Crosstown Traffic.

It's on the NME radio playlist etc.

and that guitar is the same one from the Ants ..

Well, I'm trying to disprove the notion with that mix.

Oh, and I left Jethro Tull out deliberately. Too obvious. Though I might include them on the second mix.

Christ. How could I forget about 'The Hustle'? I've even got it on the media player on my Myspace page.

The one song that sprang to mind straight away was The Coasters' version of "Love Potion Number 9". There's a proper jazz flute wig-out going on the middle of that.

I listened to Solsbury Hill and couldn't make out the flute. It must be in there somewhere and I missed it.

Does anyone have an MP3 of the Coasters song to care & share? And Carly Simon's "Spy"?

The Hustle is shortlisted for volume 2.

                                        Jackie Mittoo - Wall Street

Not bad at all. They get a bad press, flutes.

Their two best tunes, for me.

Jackie Mittoo is a good call, flute crops up a lot in connection with him; I think 'Black Organ' (fnar) features one as well.

                                            'The Hustle'? Of course.

Hey, I made a musical reference that Derek didn't get immediately! That's like when I made Andy Flower play a defensive shot in the nets at Epsom in 1996.

Plenty of fly flutes in funk, you know. And Alice Coltrane's 'Blue Nile' is gorgeous - everyone download it now if you don't know it.

If I were making a similar mix I'd probably open it with CCS's Top Of The Pops version of 'Whole Lotta Love' and close it with Lou Reed's 'Sad Song'.

A lot of people like the flutey OST of Kes, but I can't remember it.
