"New" Gainsbourg - Les Annees Psychedeliques

This compilation of late 60s Gainsbourg pieces came out recently. I just got it this week.

    18. La Horse Bonus Beats
    19. L Alouette
    20. Breakdown Suite
    21. No No Yes Yes
    22. En Melody

It features abuot a half-dozen previously released songs mostly from the excellent "Comic Strip" CD compilation, and "En Melody" from Melody Nelson. The rest is more cinematic in sound and spirit, a nice collection of B-sides and lesser-known soundtrack bits, many arranged by Jean-Claude Vannier, who was one of the best French soundtrack artists of the period (which was undoubtedly the best soundtrack period of all time) along with De Roubaix and Lai. Vannier really should get as much credit as Gainsbourg for works like Melody Nelson (SG's chef-d'oeuvre LP.)

There are a number of excellent tracks like the Moog-infused Danger, which is as elegantly smooth as a late night drive on the Grande Corniche in an orange Lamborghini Miura. Premiere Blessure will remind many of Air at its best. Psychastenie is the obligatory psych-sitar bit.

"La Horse" is the superlative piece of the lot though, it sounds like a top Lesiman track, fabulous harpsichord with dulcimer accents layered in with Vannier bass-string-drum beat. Just brilliant.

This is a great compilation for any Gainsbourg fan and a pretty nice intro for those who don't know him. Do check out "Melody Nelson" (see below) and "Comic Strip" if Gainsbourg appeals to you.

Thanks for those, linus. I've never come across most of them, and I've got an indecent amount of Serge Gainsbourg stuff.

Danger and Premiere Blessure are from the Cannabis soundtrack, which is fairly brilliant. Get hold of it if you can.

The film itself is one of those fascinating atrocities built around a Famous Pop Star by a brandy-soaked, blotch-cheeked exploitation director who knows he's done his job when there's some flesh on screen.

One scene has Paul Nicholas of (to us in the UK, at least) Just Good Friends fame smoking a reefer and spinning around on his stomach at high velocity, yapping like a Jack Russell. Mostly, though, it's just Serge mooching around in a fur coat that looks like it's going to turn on him any second, and totally making out with his missus.
