My slightly younger brother and I found Ray a fascinating figure when Dr Hook were big in the '70s. He had the air of a singing cowboy pirate about him, which we thought was super cool.

I never thought he really had to watch his friends that closely, though. Not unless the beautiful woman he was in love with liked blokes who resembled the band members on the Muppet Show.

        I quite like Sylvia's Mother.

Their second album had some single entendre titles:

This was from the same year:

Trouble is, Sawyer didn't sing lead on most of Dr Hook's hits. He took lead on "Cover Of The Rolling Stone", but most of the time it was Dennis Locorriere on lead vocals.

"The Last Morning" is a fine song. RIP.

I've seen Dennis Locorriere live and he sang almost all the Dr Hook 'hits' that appear on the compilations. On the original LPs there were always a few sung by Sawyer. He usually got the quirky, daft songs like 'Up on the Mountain'.

Sawyer had a quirky, rather daft voice... One can see what Shel Silverstein saw in him.

First it's the bloke with the eyepatch from Dr Hook. Now it's Captain from Captain & Tennille. 2019 is already a disaster.

I'd have gone with 'Sawyer Been'.
