Time to roll away the stone

As noted on the Bowie thread, Mott the Hoople drummer Dale Griffin has died, exactly a week after Bowie, who of course wrote "All The Young Dudes" for them. Apparently he first offered them "Suffragette City", but they turned it down.

So, Hoople top 5 (Duncan Gardner to thread)

    1. All The Young Dudes
    2. All The Way From Memphis
    3. One Of The Boys
    4. The Saturday Gigs
    5. Roll Away The Stone

They'd originally wanted Drive-In Saturday, but Bowie sensibly wouldn't give it up.

    1 Honaloochie Boogie
2 All the Way from Memphis
    3 All the Young Dudes
    4 Marionette
    5 Roll Away the Stone
    5=Born Late '58

    Great band.

I wouldn't have even known Mott The Hoople had a b-side to All The Young Dudes, much less there being a Top 5.

You must surely remember The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll? It was a massive Billboard #96 hit during 1974. Etc.

Just cutting in to say that, although he is rightfully better known for being Mott The Hoople's drummer, he was also the long-time producer of the Peel sessions including the two I did and he was one of the best we ever had. Excellent at quickly and efficiently getting the sound of playing live and with energy.

That b-side, One Of The Boys, is excellent (I think it was later released as a single in its own right, but it wasn't a hit).

Sad, sad news. Today was truly the day that "Buffin lost his child-like dreams."

Great lists above. I couldn't begin to pick a top 5. I think they were a superlative singles band. Even their last 2 singles, when they were on the verge of splitting up were great - Foxy, Foxy (with its Wall of Sound and Will you still love me tomorrow intro) and Saturday Gigs ("I was ready to quit, but then we went to Croydon.")

An absolute legend as the producer of just about every break out acts Peel Session from the 70's onwards

Roger Pusey (2) and John Porter (2) produced the Smiths Peel sessions (if that's what you meant).

He had something to do with Hatful of Hollow. I can remember this because, at the time, people I'd started hanging round with who were slightly older than me were bandying the name "Dale Griffin" around in connection with the album in serious, knowing tones. I'd never heard of him.
