No, it's a variation of "I stopped by the liquor store on the way home." Perfectly cromulent.

It sorta implies that one was driving.

Why did he go into a church? Was he religious? Or for architectural or other reasons?

On edit: no, not religious, because "I pretend to pray".

To get out of the cold, is the implication.

Churches don't tend to be warm places, though, and if he had been driving surely the car would have been warmer.

"Stop in" is a brief visit.

I don't think driving is implied. Especially in this context where she'd been for a walk (on a winter's day)

I suspect it is what I have heard David Crystal describe as a "blend" though where "stepped into" and "stopped by" have become combined

The third line says he/she had been for a walk.

Would "preacher" imply a Protestant church? Just asking.

If you listen to California Dreamin', 12:30, and Creeque Alley, you basically have the entire bio of the Mamas and Papas.

Interesting that that so many of these involve intentions or dreams about visiting California rather than being written by natives of the state.

If you think of where the rest of the world aspired to, it was America. If you were young and already in America, you aspired to California. It was the place you went to escape the life you had. Or it was for a lot of the sixties and seventies at least.

Even longer ago than that. California was The Promised Land since the 1920s, or even earlier:

                              California's a Garden of Eden,
A paradise to live in or see.
                              But believe it or not
You won't think it's so hot
If you ain't got the Doh-Re-Mi.
                              — Woody Guthrie

The River by Good Charlotte name checks a "City of Angels". I've always thought it was about a kid going to LA.

Well, it's fairly relaxed English by comparison, but it assists with the meter.

My Darling Clementine. Obscure origins, but indelibly linked to the Californian Gold Rush.

Also Route 66, which I didn't realise was first recorded by the (Nat) King Cole Trio in the early 1940s.

Although for me, it was Depeche Mode's remix in 1987 that first got me thinking of travelling West.

And, also back in the 20s there's Al Jolson:

                                            California, here I come
Right back where I started from
Where bowers and flowers bloom in the sun
Each morning at dawning birdies sing and everything
A sun kissed miss said, "Don't be late"
That's why I can hardly wait
So open up that Golden Gate
                                            California, here I come.

Maybe not Top 5 but a good indie rock/indie pop/alternative rock song:

                                              Beach Bunny, "Ms. California"

For your California music needs, a road trip through the state in song:

From Palm Springs via LA to Ventura
From Big Sur via San Francisco to Bakersfield
