When two worlds collide and make fantastic

What are the best examples for taking a song from one genre and making a cover of it in a totally different genre.

    I'll nominate this

Finnish Hillbilly outfit Steve'n'Seagulls take Iron Maidens heavy metal classic and make it sound brand new.

Soul music wins this easily. Otis Redding's version of "Try A Litle Tenderness" is the best example of soul reworking and owning a song from another genre.

Loads more soul covers of non-soul songs here.

          They nicked the idea, though.

The Main Ingredient's original was great, but the reggae arrangement and Freddie McGregor's wonderful vocal performance swing it:

It's not particularly genre-shifting, but Robyn Hitchcock's cover of The Ghost in You, originally by Psychedelic Furs is really very good indeed.

Well, if we are going to go for the obvious ones. I just can't believe that there were people in the music industry that would deal with this lot

Well, it's only obvious inasmuch as it takes the lumpen dirge of the original and injects a bit of fun into it.

That Dread Zeppelin thing is appalling.

There's Tragedy, a heavy metal Bee Gees Tribute act (or more like an 80s heavy metal Bee Gees Tribute Act) that have now broadened their horizons to cover a range of disco.

As The Sisters of Mercy seem to like songs whose name comprises a woman's name to the exclusion of everything else, it was probably inevitable that they'd cover Jolene.

It's still a disappointment to me that Alice wasn't a more snappily titled cover version of Smokie's big hit.
