What category do The Drifters belong in?

Good one. They cover all bases as a splintered zombie Trigger's broom band. It's also very pleasing to see from Wikipedia that they have had a member called Dixon and another one called Dock Green.

            I did not know that.

Yep, she was immediately pre-Mosley IIRC.

                  Legacy bands.

I foresee a time where future generations related to band members 'inherit' the band/brand and continue to perform under names like Bucks Fizz 2075 or 22nd Century Jam. Maybe the dead grandparents will be hologrammed in for the encore. Or revived from their cryogenic coffins.

There could be another sideline of tribute bands who become semi-authorised by dint of original band members taking the stage with them. Clem Burke has sat in with Bootleg Blondie from time to time. That said, Clem Burke seems to play about five concerts a day, 365 days a year, so he may just have played with every band.

I think that these kinds of bands remain 'tribute' acts, but with special guests. It does skew things to the nth degree, however.

One day maybe there'll be a tribute band that eventually assimilates all of the original group. Christ knows what we'd call that phenomenon.

Thanks to this I delved into Clem Burke’s Wiki and discovered he did all the drumming on Eurythmics album Revenge.

I think this also goes back to how the Glenn Miller Orchestra carried on after his disappearance. You can trace it through The Crickets after Buddy Holly's death. There's a core style and repertoire that is kept alive by performance and by rerecordings using better technology.

He toured with them as well.

Martin Chambers has sat in with a Pretenders tribute band as well.

I think I have mentioned that, when the UK subs tour Japan, it’s often Charlie Harper with a local tribute band.
