    Rain in song

Combining music and the weather, I'll take advantage of an earworm I've had for the last few days, courtesy of Mazzy Star:

"Man says it's raining, raining outside,
I'll be out there in a little while"

    ('Give You My Loving')

Quick, now - before it brightens up!

Madness : Sun and the Rain

while i realise they are akin to the worst of the worst for many over this side of the 'net, IMHO this is one of their best singles.

(i always preferred the darker/gloomier edges of their stuff anyway)

Rain by the Beatles. One of the many instances in their career of a B side being better than the A side.

The day I met the big boy
            It was pissing with rain
            And we went

Well I Wonder by The Smiths - one of their most criminally under-rated songs and perhaps the ultimate sighing-wistfully-staring-self-indulgently-out-of-a-window tune - actually fades out with the sound of rainfall.

What I've got they used to call the blues
                Nothin' is really wrong
                Feelin' like I don't belong
                Walkin' around
                Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down

There are lots of romantic songs about walking in the rain. But do any of them come from the UK?

Oh, I thought we were looking for songs with actual sounds of rain in them.

Love Unlimited, "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", obviously.

Johnny Ray - Walkin' In The Rain
BJ Thomas - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again

                      oh, thousands, I suppose.

Well, November Rain fills both the "singing about" and "sound of" rain categories.

Crying (possibly lacking a "g") in the Rain by Whitesnake

The start of Black Sabbath has the most portentous thunder one could wish for.

Songs that include the sound of rain and are about the rain experience — so to speak.

Walking in the Rain — The Ronettes
Rhythm of the Rain — the Cascades
Rhapsody in the Rain — Lou Christie

A song that doesn't mention rain but evokes it like no other:

Come Softly To Me — The Fleetwoods

Lord there's gallons of them. You could be bailing for weeks...

Raindrops (falling on your head or not). Rain on the Roof, on the Scarecrow, on a night in Georgia and don't even start on Rainbows.

Best title though has to be: Rain, The Park & Other Things. Says everything really.

The Things We Do For Love - 10CC

As for rainy songs, "Prayers for Rain" - The Cure
followed on Disintegration by "The Same Deep Water as You" which has rain noises at the start and end.

Lloyd Cole - Fool You Are and there's always the rain

                                                Rain in song

Dar Williams weighs in with a positive spin: "The Beauty Of The Rain".

And the Temptations like themselves a bit of nasty weather in "I Wish It Would Rain".

Randy Crawford did a lovely version of "Rainy Night In Georgia", and also did "Tender Falls The Rain".

Neil Sedaka found bad weather funny.

Oh, and Gordon Lightfoot liked to begin the day with a shower.

Bob Dylan associated downpours with a woman, numbered twice.

And Adam Duritz of Counting Crows believed himself to be among the aristocracy of heavy drizzle.

And no mention of Gene Kelly yet???
