    There goes my mind

I got together with some friends the other day and we were talking about bands that opened for the Rolling Stones in the US. I didn't see the Stones until the Steel Wheels tour at the LA Coliseum. Living Colour was the first band and then Guns and Roses was next. There's a great piece about having Guns open at a point when they were probably the biggest new rock band. Anyway, I saw the Stones again in 1994 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers opened (Buddy Guy was first up). I was not a fan of the Chili Peppers at that time but they've grown on me. Anyway, I have absolutely no recollection of seeing the Chili Peppers. I drove with a friend of mine and he shot the show for some magazines and claims we were there in time to see the Chili Peppers. Am I alone in this big memory gap? I mean, it's one thing if I forgot that I saw Living Colour because they were opening for everyone in LA around that time but the Chili Peppers?

BTW, my friend saw Van Halen open for the Stones on the Tattoo You tour and claims Van Halen took it easy that night. Guns did not; they seemed to come to take the rock and roll crown.

My brother was at one of those Coliseum shows. He also viewed it as GNR trying to outshine the ageing (!) Stones but he reckoned they failed spectacularly - but to quote Christine Keeler, "he would, wouldn't he". In particular he disliked Axl's stage ranting and has hated him/them ever since.

I'm sure we've covered similar ground before but the American approach to opening acts, tour packages etc throws up some interesting line ups that you wouldn't get in the UK, where bigger acts tend to be more picky about support slots.

I thought this was going to announce that somebody in The Pixies died.

I remember Living Colour. What happened to them?

Obsolete once high definition came in. Etc. As far as I'm aware Living Colour still tour. (Interesting that an American band uses the English spelling. Well, not that interesting, but...)

As for G 'n R, they weren't fit to shine the Stones' brogues. And I don't even especially like the Stones.

But back to the OP, no, you're alone. I have a few bands that I've seen (and I have proof) but I have no recollection. And others I'm positive I've seen but can't prove or convince anyone of (not that this is a big issue).

I saw Beck support the Stones in roughly 2006 or '07, but have no clue who it was on Voodoo Lounge at Skydome.

              [Apparently Spin Doctors. No recollection.]

Also, unless it was with my lovely wife - my almost exclusive concert partner of 25 years - I usually can't remember who I went to a show with. Tons of exceptions based on specific points of reference, but generally it was 'me and somebody else'.

                  Probably best kept that way.

It is interesting how we are somewhat focusing on bands you might selectively forget.

I know that my mother saw most of the big emerging acts of the 60s when she was dating my dad (his favorite haunt was the Twisted Wheel in Manchester) and she can barely remember any of them because it wasn't her thing. Hendrix is the one I still can't get my head around her having no memory of. All she can recount is that "your dad took me to see a lot of bands at that place".

I remember seeing The Art of Noise and, soon after, Frankie Goes To Hollywood at a small venue before each of them 'broke'. One had a lesbian folk singer named Phranc supporting and the other had a variety of female impersonators. I can't recall which had which, though.

Discussion of such specific points of reference in ireland usually leads to someone mentioning the punchline to this.

It's interesting that Living Colour opened that entire US tour but Guns n Roses was only on the Coliseum dates. The Stones didn't need help selling tickets, although I doubt they could have sold out 4 nights at the Coliseum without Guns. Most of the other dates maxed out at 3 nights.

I just looked back at the 1981 US tour and they didn't bring the same band every night, but wow there are some odd combinations plus some massive stars. The one that stands out to me is The Clash, Iggy Pop, and Santana in Detroit.

Didn't Mick Jagger have something to do with Living Colour? Like he produced them or signed them or something? I bought that album with Cult of Personality on it and recall it being quite good. I haven't listened to anything purchased in the '90s since 2000, but if memory serves.....

Jagger produced demos and heavily advocated for them when they were unsigned.

Spin Doctors came to W&M when I was there. I didn't go, but everyone said it was shockingly bad.

Remarkably, they're still around. I wonder what the 'county fair circuit' equivalent is for washed up pop bands? Surely they're not even casino level.

I think the Spin Doctors do the summer fair circuit - there was a Friday night street festival in Connecticut that I think had them, Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth play over the past ten years.

Bringing me to argue that "Remarkably, they are still around" is no longer in the slightest remarkable, as nearly every band with a hit single and bills to pay are back together to some extent.

I think they played a street festival thing we had here in State College. But it was one of those things where you needed a ticket to sit in front of the stage. I didn't go.

If they sounded as good as they do on the records, they'd be a great bar band.

I saw the Spin Doctors at Brixton Academy in their heyday. The sound was terrible.

I'm not a very good rock and roll person insofar as I don't go to many shows, so I can remember all the ones I've been to.
I don't like being that cramped in with other people. I prefer to sit and not be knocked over.

I used to make a point of not bothering with support bands so no doubt I've seen the last couple of songs of any number of bands, without having the slightest idea who they were. I'm told I saw Coldplay that way but I couldn't guarantee it and I actually quite.liked their first album.

Shit, that's the washed-up '90s trifecta, right there.

Caveat that Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) is actually quite smart, totally dominating Celebrity Jeopardy.
