Now I'll think about some other songs where there are at least 5 good versions. I'm sure there are some Dylan songs that fit this bill for sure and maybe Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark."
There are (apparently) 166 recorded versions of Hey Joe so there's bound to be more than five decent ones I guess.
Yeah, for me, I'd go with the 3 I listed as some of the best. The Make-Up version I like a lot because the version sounds so different and there is some slight shifts in the lyrics, which I find interesting.
I can't think of many songs of which I know five versions period.
They don't have to be good I guess, just memorable in some way. I was going to post a five of Stoney End, I know three really good versions one that's meh, and one that misses the point totally. That would work I think.
Google suggests that there are over 2000 versions of Summertime, and my commitment to this thread does not involve me having listened to all of them to provide a definitive top 5,
Billie Holliday
Sam Cooke
Big Brother and the Holding Company
Bobby Womack and the Roots
Fun Boy Three
(highly commended: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong)
1. Isaac Hayes (1969)
2. Dionne Warwick (1964)
3. The Stranglers (1978, the instrumental part of it anyway)
4. Rhetta Hughes (1969)
5. Robin McKelle & The FlyTones (2013)
