LGBTQ Songs That Are More Than 40 Years Old

Cher had a hit in 1972 with a French song from 1960 that had a strong lesbian theme:

    "Then what will you do
    When he sets you free
    Just the way that you
    Said good-bye to me."

All the Girls Love Alice, from Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) - although I have to say that I don’t know how ‘inclusive’ the lyrics are.

Several of Ma Rainey's songs back in the day.

talking of The Kinks, what about "David Watts"?

Do you mean the line "he is so gay and fancy free"? Could be referencing the old use of the word. See also No Milk Today.

No, not that. It's just a touch really: "and when I lay in bed at night, wish I could be like David Watts... all the girls in the neighbourhood, want to go out with David Watts, they do their best but can't succeed, because he is a pure and noble breed..."

Next year is the 40th anniversary of "Do you really want to hurt me?", the year after is "It's Raining Men" and the year after that, it's "Relax"

More pertinently to the title, You Make Me Feel Might Real by Sylvester is 43 years old.

My memory is not what it was, but that's the one. Damn fine song. Does it get played on Radio 2 along with the rest of his oeuvre?

I’m not much of an R2 listener (Popmaster and POTP only) but I’d doubt it sees the same amount of exposure as Sailing or even Maggie May. (Sorry, not that helpful an answer.)

The song was a real eye-opener when it made #2 in 1976, however. (Limited US airplay saw it become a much-lesser Top 40 hit.)

Yes, The Killing of Georgie (it had two parts, the first being the most recognisable) was such a surprise to hear when it hit the charts. The theme seemed so unique for a mainstream hit. Walk on the Wild Side was so full of oblique references to the casual listener that its subject matter seemed to pass a lot of people by, including the censors.

Just to clarify, the French lyrics don't have a lesbian theme.

Still, it's a song that's been recorded by Cher, Shirley Bassey and Dalida. i think we can say it's been thoroughly torched.
