I think there was a UK doowop group in the late 50's, called the Shanklins. Might be misremembering, but their song was "Under the Boardwalk", and it had accents.

I don't want to disrupt the thread topic because I'm diggin' the posts, but SD's parenthetical note about gospel reminded me of this WFMU radio show. I don't know how much interest there is in a gospel thread (might be an old one but it didn't show up with the advanced search via Google). Anyway, this is a really good gospel show:

Well, if anyone is interested, here's a mix of Doo Wop Christmas tracks. I was rather pleased with the cover I made for it.

Revisiting this thread today and I noticed it was missing the Italian element. Here's Dion and The Belmonts with their first Top 40 hit I Wonder Why. They kinda set the standard for white vocal groups: shrill falsetto, and a wide variety of dip-dips, yip-yips and so on. Their stage presentation noticeably leans heavily on barber-shop singing rather than gospel.

The Earls with their only big hit Remember Then. Four years later (1962) than I Wonder Why. By this time white Doo Wop often featured a characteristic repetitious background chorus and was moving towards highly stylised lead singing — cf: The Four Seasons. There are also the first hints of Beach Boys style harmonies.

Wildwood NJ had a whole bunch of Doo Wop hotels (which if they saved, would have been the new Art Deco district of Miami Beach....but they "refurbished" most of them,) but they "refurbished" them.

Amor de Cosmos I never tire of old Dion & the Belmonts stuff. But the other thing which struck me from that video - did all teenage girls chew gum in 1958?

I know Gman made a mix, which I downloaded last year. I don't have that in front of me to A<->B to this mix, but if you want to pull up YouTube during the holiday gathering or because you like Christmas music:
