The Specials gig as mentioned above, originally set for July 2020, has now been re scheduled for July 2022. It'll definitely be a case of " rattle your pill dispensers and wave your walking sticks in the air" by the time it's on.

Madness and Squeeze playing 29th November sold out in a day. I decided to skip it, Madness gigs have become annoyingly messy, and I'm still a bit doubtful about large indoor gigs.

Gruff Rhys at Islington Assembly Hall last night was a great return to live entertainment. The seated with table service set-up was actually quite enjoyable, in an old time nightclub way. There was enough of a crowd to generate atmosphere and noise behind our position at the front. It was a solo show, with autobiographical monologue and visual presentation elements as well as music, exploring how GR came to use signs and placards in his stage act (a book, Resist Phoney Encores, was published earlier this year). He is a very droll raconteur and winningly sends up his own spacey public persona. The music was selections from across his career with a couple of songs from yesterday's new album added in. Gruff played guitar and keyboards with loops, metronome clicks and other embellishments. Gathering Moss and If We Were Words (We Would Rhyme) were highlights. He is, of course, a fantastic singer.

February marked 25 years since I first saw Super Furry Animals at the Concorde in Brighton. Over the years I have come to prefer Gruff's solo and side projects to the band but in all his guises he has brought me a huge amount of happiness and enjoyment in that time. I can't think of anyone better to have set the ball rolling again with.

Gruff Rhys was one of the last gigs I saw before the apocalypse, really good night.

Meanwhile, I nearly shelled out actual money for the Glastonbury thing thing but then saw the running order and everything I wanted to see was in the first couple of hours and they were only doing maybe 20 minutes each, so I took the Eurovision option instead (and it was a bit arrogant of them to go up against Eurovision in the first place).

Anyway something went badly wrong with the streaming, reportedly no one could see anything for the first two hours and then they had to open it up without a pay wall for the rest of it. This being after every two bob indie act has managed to do streaming gigs without such problems for the last year odd.

You would have thought that, having no revenue for 15 months, the world's premier ticket website would be delighted to take your money. Not a fucking chance,I've been trying to book tickets on their website for three days, to find that they,at various times, didn't recognise my address , my postcode and my 3 digit security code. Absolute shower of tossers.

Tempted to go to at least a day of the Pitchfork festival. Particularly because the stubborn hipsters have selected all female headline acts.

So having said I was skipping Madness in November, I then got a text from my best friends wife. Turns out that night is his 50th birthday, and she'd love it if myself and my brother would go to the gig with them. Having got more and more pissed off with Ticketmaster refusing to sell me tickets, luckily the only record shop in Dublin that still sells tickets the old fashioned way has reopened, and I got two tickets today, for 14.00 euro cheaper than Ticketwanker was going to charge me.

                      Nice one, elguapo.

I can't remember what it was but I was looking at something the other day and Ticketbastard's rake off was enough to change me from a lukewarm but likely yes to a no. It always grates when there's no option but to feed them.

Soundcellar in Dublin, where I got my tickets, is one of the hidden gems that are disappearing everywhere. It's just a doorway beside a Subway sandwich place, and you go down the stairs lined with old gig posters, into one of the smallest shops I've ever been in. They specialise in Goth/Industrial to Metal, and there's always a couple of hairy Gentlemen hanging around chatting to the owner Pat. If Pat isn't 70,then he's on nodding acquaintance with that age. He doesn't use a cash register, just calculates everything on a calculator. The gig tickets are all kept in a cardboard box, with no filing system that I can see, judging by the constant searching that he has to do. The place is an asset to the city, and we'll miss him when he's gone.

One of the shows I was supposed to go to last year has been rescheduled, so hopefully seeing Ty Segall's psychedelic act Fuzz in November.

Also got the first new tickets, for Deafheaven in October, fingers crossed.

"Like". Should be even more interesting given the apparent evolution of the sound.

Strictly speaking this is 2022 but, as looking forward in hope is the default setting of The Big No Gig Thread, the line up for Rockaway Beach in January is starting to look very good after a second round of announcements today.

Couple of gigs in October I fancy - Nathan Bell is coming over some time in October (probably early and probably promoted by a guy I'm friendly with) and Laura Veirs is planning a gig in Glasgow too. Havent got the Veirs tickets yet and I'll wait until I know that restrictions are lifted up here even if Krankie subsequently locks down again.

Really fancy a trip to Newcastle in December for Rev Payton's Big Damn Band. Again it'll come down to numbers. I'd probably just drive down to Newcastle, get a hotel overnight and come home Monday morning. If I'm still WFH then I can even try and take a half day flexi, put myself down for a late finish and not need the whole of the Monday off.

Following the announcements around the easing of restrictions, there is a bit of a bursting of the dam in acts announcing gigs in the next couple of months. In particular the National Lottery Fund appears to be supporting a whole raft of gigs in independent venues, sometimes involving acts that are usually too big to play there, other times acts that would have played there anyway. If you're confident about going to 'normal' indoor gigs (and I'm not sure I am just yet - although I'm going to a socially distanced one in a marquee at the weekend) it's worth keeping an eye out for announcements.

I haven't seen any bands since January (?) 2020. Can't remember, but this week I will attend a benefit show that kicks-off Lollapalooza. That will be indoors. I will wear a mask for sure. Then I have something with work at Lollapalooza so will be there. Outdoors. Luckily the heatwave that hit us is supposed to be done before the festival starts on Thursday. I will have my mask with me and wear it for sure if I am in an area that is really crowded. If the area is less crowded and I am six feet from other people then I'll see (esp. if the projections about the heatwave are wrong and the high temperatures extend).

I preordered Snapped Ankles' new album from Rough Trade, which includes a ticket for an early evening show and signing at the Brick Lane shop this evening. It's a full capacity thing with a request to be considerate to staff and fellow attendees. Add in an extra journey across town in the fringes of rush hour and I'm leaning towards skipping it and just picking up the disc when I'm over that way later in the week.

The show tonight at the Metro in Chicago included about 5% mask use (maybe less). And this was a crowd of people pushing forward to sing along with the headliner. Talk about a super-spreading event.

In other non-music related news, this week has been my first week back on Chicago's L (the metro). Mask use is really high (95% plus) but the music venue is right near Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs baseball team plays. I left the music venue around the bottom of the 8th inning (8 out of 9 innings for folks who don't know much about baseball). There was a crush of non-believers among the Cubs fans who appeared at the L station. I'd say that about 1% were wearing masks. So, way below normal ridership. I guess the Cubs fans think they have reached herd immunity.

I've booked tickets to see Nadine Shah at the 100 Club later this month, which will be the first time back at a club show for me.

It is a resumption of a series of occasional concerts sponsored by Fred Perry so the tickets are only £5, which is handy if it doesn't feel right on the night.

I hope he and you both have a most satisfactory afternoon, elg.

I've decided not to go to see Soft Cell in November. Tickets are £75 - £98 by the time Ticketbastard have had their gouge. SC's big (and brilliant) O2 Arena show in 2018 was billed as something of a farewell, so to save face they are claiming this jaunt is for the 40th anniversary of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and promising to play the album in full. Much as I love them, this seems a flimsy premise. They're Soft Cell, not Bob bloody Dylan. It would be fairly difficult for them not to play at least three quarters of the album anyway.
