    New Music for 2021

Hell, if I have a place here, it's to start the annual new Music thread. That's my role, I have accepted it.

On 1st Jan, Grimes released a 'Rave Version' of her Miss Anthropecene album. Bless. I have enjoyed the new version of 'So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth', mixed by Anna.

However, the first video offering to the group is a football song. 'Three O'Clock on a Saturday' is one of those great things, a list song. Of Scottish football grounds, with a chorus that isn't a list of grounds.

    The video is lovely.

Agree about the video, and it's a nice idea, but the chorus is a bit overwrought, and not an especially captivating tune (or arrangement).

Add: another thought - those Scottish grounds need to be pronounced with a lot more conviction, in a guttural Scottish accent. There's poetry in those names, and it's not coming through.

All very fair review. As usual, you put it all in much better words than I could.

Still believe the song has merit. Of course, had Aidan Moffat done it then he'd have done it better, but he didn't, and the Eisenhowers did, to their credit.

Heh, I reckon the Arab Strap treatment might have been taking it a bit far - apart from Ibrox and Parkhead, you don't want Scottish football grounds sounding like the devil's dens of deviance and depravity. I'm sure there are some Scottish poets with the necessary emphatic tone to elicit the romance, delight and perpetual suffering of the regulars at Cliftonville and Boghead Park. Good to hear the extinct Douglas Park get a name-check, by the way.

It's from last year, but it is making me feel happy right now! Joyous lesbian guitar pop

Technically, this is from last year too but I heard it only last week on Marc Riley's 6Music Show and her album is coming out at the end of the month. Anna B Savage - Corncrakes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb_KDIDE09s

Trying to use Bandcamp more and find new stuff there. I knew nothing of Observe Since '98, but really liked the use of French music samples and loops over the course Le Dernier Royaume https://observesince98.bandcamp.com/...ernier-royaume

Again, released late 2020, but i'm making my way through Bandcamp recommendations and this came up https://moormother.bandcamp.com/album/brass. Enjoying what i'm hearing so far, positive Pitchfork review (fwiw) here https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums...-mother-brass/

This was released last year but the album it's from (a joint release with dad) is out next month. I reckon grandad would approve.

I like the Sleaford Mods/Billy Nomates 'Mork and Mindy' song. Not really the kind of thing I generally listen to these days and Sleaford Mods tend to get short shrift on OTF but I enjoy their records a lot.

This is delightful by Lael Neale, recommended by someone on Twitter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCTJ...ature=emb_logo - single came out in October, but debut album out in February via Sub Pop.

Started listening to Norwegian band Pom Poko last night. New album out this week https://pompoko.bandcamp.com/album/cheater and I enjoyed 'Andrew' as well as their 2019 album, Birthday. Vaguely describe them as 'art rock' but there is a heady mix of influences there I think.

Pom Poko are quite entertaining. I enjoyed their 2019 single Crazy Energy Night and the current Like a Lady bodes fairly well for the new album.

They've announced a tour starting in September and it is tempting to get a ticket and keep my fingers crossed...

I wish I could feel that optimistic about any gig in 2021.

I really liked the video in the opening post, KGR.

                            Enjoyed this too :

Swedish duo Wy have released a new song available here https://wyareyoucrying.bandcamp.com/. Really enjoyed their first two albums and in contrast to those, this seems positively upbeat.

The new Mogwai album sounds like it will be a good one. Also hearing the first tracks from Black Country, New Slint sound promising.

It really niggles me that they ay from the Black Country.

Pals and I shared a train carriage with them after their appearance at last year's Rockaway Beach. Polite and well spoken young people.

Thanks! I thought they would find a way to walk away from those badges on their sleeves, but apparently not.

Which doesn't make it any less enjoyable and stop me raising a big smile, but...

This EP by Patriarchy is the 2021 music I didn't know I needed.

▶︎ Reverse Circumcision: The Remixes | Patriarchy (bandcamp.com)

Patriarchy is Californian artist Actually Huizenga (suspect not a birth given name),

The three tracks currently available on bandcamp, remixes by Geneva Jacuzzi, Nitzer Ebb and Drab Majesty, are darkwave synchpop excellence.

The Anna B Savage album, A Common Turn https://open.spotify.com/album/6RQAr...QSmWx2yWGPoH_g is out today

https://annabsavage.bandcamp.com/album/a-common-turn and no doubt will be one of my favourites by end of the year. Given the new Goat Girl album a listen but it largely passed me by, and now i'm listening to The Besnard Lakes Have Really Long and Silly Album Titles and I Must Stop Calling Them The Bernard Lakes https://open.spotify.com/album/2KTaS...QyiS1efbiARcXw - i've always liked their album covers more than their actual music but Raindrops is a nice song.

Thanks to The Quietus, I've discovered (for myself, obviously - I haven't unearthed this band as part of a cultural mission) Still Corners, whose latest album 'The Last Exit' is causing me to say, "Yes, I like this very much" to myself in the kitchen while making pasta and wishing that Dry fucking January would come to its end just a day or two sooner, please.
