The spirit of Oi! lives on.

In any early 1980s episode of Top of the Pops, it felt like an even money shot that one of either Shalamar or Shakatak would feature, both playing the sort of grown up music which didn't appeal as much as Adam and the Ants or Duran Duran.
The former were American, black and were disco/r&b. The latter were British, white and played something called "jazz funk". To this day, I have to look them up to remind me which was which.

                  Shalamar were considerably better.

Shakatak just sounded like interlude music. Tunes that elderly ladies would’ve thrown pots to on The Generation Game.

                    Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs
They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies.
The latter is embarrassing as I spent a pleasant afternoon backstage at Reading Festival with one those groups but which one I know not.

TMBG has an accordion. Did they have an accordion?

TMBG have turned up in a few of the recent repeats of Top of the Pops, doing Birdhouse In Your Soul. In a reverse de-mix up, BIYS sounds less like the Big Bang Theory theme than I thought it did when I heard that and assumed it was them.

Shalamar were brilliant and there’s only a degrees of separation or two between them and AATA and Duran.

Jeffrey Daniels used to come to the Mud Club with us.
