A US version of Eurovision is being created, so naturally, all 50 states will have representatives in the contest, chosen in local heats, before progressive eliminations culminating in a grand final. It will be interesting to see whether the more Hispanic states, such as Arizona and New Mexico, or Midwesterners like Michigan and Wisconsin stick together like the European dynamics, and whether musical stereotypes apply, such as Kentucky bluegrass and California hip-hop.

Intriguing idea, but would Americans really go for it in significant numbers? Eurovision's current huge level of commercial success is largely based on its being an international celebration of campness, isn't it, with fanatically enthusiatic support from LGBT people and allies? Most American music doesn't really lend itself to that kind of culture in the same way that Europop does, surely, so it is likely to have a different vibe and struggle to get attention?
