    Wise decisions by musicians

We're used to artists making boneheaded decisions, but what were some really good ones?

    1. Dolly Parton turns down Elvis

Elvis asks Dolly if he can record I Will Always Love You. Col. Tom, however, asks her to sign over half of the publishing rights. Dolly says no and makes a pretty penny indeed.

    2. Led Zeppelin

Jimmy Page employs Peter Grant as his new band's manager. He retains all publishing rights and ownership of the band's recordings. He gets the biggest advance ever for a new band and spends the 1970s shitting money out of every orifice.

Johnny Marr leaving The Smiths before Morrissey's racism had become explicit, e.g. Marr avoided having his name on 'Bengali in Platforms' by a year.

The Beatles replacing their drummer, who wasn't in Ringo's class or good enough to play on the tracks they were about to write.

Waylon Jennings for giving up his seat on the ill-fated Beechcraft ahead of the Day the Music Died?

(Not such a great decision for J P Richardson, obviously...)

Steve Harris kicking Paul Di'Anno out of Iron Maiden. As good as the first two albums were, he was off the rails with substance abuse and wasn't up to the touring schedule. Enter Bruce Dickinson and the rest is history.

Metallica kick out Dave Mustaine. They go on to be one of the Big Four of thrash. Mustaine spends a large part of his career trying to one up them (Mechanix, anyone?) and Megadeth become titans of the genre. Both end up in bad places but keep on rocking (in fairness Mustaine started in a bad place and only left once in a blue moon).

Tom Jones recording Reload? Reinventing himself as a mentor / inspirational figure / national treasure surrounded by the bright young things of Britpop when for a long time he had been a bit of a joke.

In that instance, I suspect that changing the band's name was probably the wisest decision.

                  That’s a good shout.
