Assignment was probably a somewhat grand way of putting it – I had to write an editorial and for reasons too complex to explain I took the chance to write about hardbop drummers. A fun writing which was a nice change from all the doom and gloom we've had to write on recently in the music world.

Heh. If the reaction from your readers is a positive one, you can maybe treat yourself to writing those Charles Tolliver, Kohsuke Mine and Steve Grossman retrospectives that I'm sure you've always wanted to do.

The splendid 2015 limited pressing compilation album ‘A New Life (Private, Independent And Youth Jazz In Great Britain 1966-1990)' on Jazzman Records is a real treasure trove of rare material, all of it digitally restored from the original recordings by Francis Gooding and Duncan Booker. I have albums by a couple of the artists featured, but the remainder were completely unknown to me (and most have quite probably been forgotten by all but their friends, relatives and a handful of diehard crate diggers). Of the three tracks I’m posting this morning, the pick of the bunch is ‘The Dragon’ by Walsall Youth Jazz who, I’m pleased to see, are still going strong as the Walsall Jazz Orchestra.

Some jazz from Bulgaria this morning, starting with ‘Autumn Sun’ from the self-titled 1969 album by pianist Milcho Leviev’s Jazz Focus ‘65, featuring Simeon Shterev flute, Lyubomir Mitrov bass and Peter Slavov drums.

‘On Charles Lloyd’ from the self-titled 1977 album by the Simeon Shterev Quartet – Shterev on flute, Mario Stanchev piano, Theodossi Stoykov bass and Peter Slavov drums. Quite possibly the most unlikely and uncomfortable-looking bunch of jazz musicians ever to line up for a publicity shot.
