Finally, something from Billy Cobham, whose obvious talents as a drummer often caused his abilities as a songwriter to be overlooked. This is the lovely 'Heather' from his 1974 album 'Crosswinds', with John Abercrombie guitar, George Duke keyboards, Michael Brecker saxophone, Randy Brecker trumpet, Garnett Brown trombone and John Williams bass.

Jamaican dub reggae meets Norwegian jazz. Not an obvious mix perhaps, but it works brilliantly on 'Nordub', Sly and Robbie's 2018 collaboration with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and guitarist Eivind Aarset. This is 'European Express'.

Vibraphone player Gary Burton, who had himself been something of a teenage prodigy, brought the18 year old guitarist Pat Metheny into his band in the early 70's, and the two played together off and on throughout that decade. They hadn't recorded together for a dozen-or-so years when Burton invited Metheny back into the studio for his 1989 album 'Reunion', with Mitchel Forman keyboards, Will Lee bass and Peter Erskine drums. This is 'Will You Say You Will'.

Cheers for that track upthread GLW! Steve Grossman doesn't have a particularly great reputation I think, but I absolutely love him on the Miles Davis Fillmore stuff. He's electric on there, metaphorically if not literally.
World Galaxy is an album I've spent only a bit of time with. Somehow the ones that really stick with me with Alice are the earlier Impulse! ones like Journey in Satchidanadana and particularly Ptah, The El Daoud. Of course, often it's just the ones that you come to first that impress themselves indelibly into your brain.

Starting this evening with a slice of Brit jazz-funk from 1982. The Warriors were a one-off project put together by guitarist/vocalist Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick (Incognito), bassist Tubbs Williams & keyboard player Peter Hinds, both of Light Of The World, for the purpose of recording the 'Behind The Mask' album. This track, 'Bustin Loose' features saxophonist Chris Hunter and trumpeter Guy Barker, both playing with considerable gusto.

British saxophonist Theo Travis, currently part of the re-incarnated Soft Machine and (highly recommended) prog band The Tangent has had a long career as both a sideman and solo artist. This is 'Waterlily Boogie' from his 1996 album 'Secret Island', featuring David Gordon keyboards, Marc Parnell drums, Gary Hammond percussion and Rob Statham bass.

The 1975 album 'Native Dancer' was as much a showcase for Brazilian vocalist Milton Nascimento as it was for Shorter. This is 'Tarde', with Shorter on tenor sax, Nascimento vocals/guitar, Herbie Hancock again on electric piano, Wagner Tiso organ, Roberto Silva drums and Dave McDaniel bass.

Finally, 'Prometheus Unbound' from the 2018 album 'Emanon' - an album that may prove to be Wayne Shorter's last, given the ill-health that has recently caused his virtual retirement from music at the age of almost 87. This features Shorter on soprano sax, Danilo Perez piano, John Patitucci bass, Brian Blade drums and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
