Finally, something from Armenian pianist/vocalist Tigran Hamasyan, who draws his inspiration from conventional jazz traditions as well as the folk music of his homeland. This is 'Drip' from the 2013 album 'Shadow Theater'. And yes, Jan Bang is on this as well.

This evening's offerings come from that intersection on the Venn diagram where jazz meets neo-soul, funk and broken beat. First up is Australia's rather wonderful (and rather wonderfully named) Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. This is 'Marcus Garvey' from their self-titled 2018 album, with drummer and bandleader Ziggy Zeitgeist (quite possibly not his real name), Lewis Moody keyboards, Erica Tucceri flute, Matt Hayes bass and Javier Fredes percussion.

Drummer Yussef Dayes (a polyrythymic monster) and keyboard player Kamaal Williams parted ways after releasing their only album 'Black Focus' on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label in 2016. This is 'Strings Of Light', with Shabaka Hutchings saxophone, Yelfris Valdes trumpet, Mansur Brown guitar and Kareem Dayes bass.

Pianist and bandleader Mike Westbrook's 1971 album 'Metropolis' is widely regarded as one of the landmark recordings of British jazz, with a top line-up of musicians including Harry Beckett, Ray Warleigh, Mike Osborne, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Gary Boyle, Henry Lowther, John Marshall and Chris Laurence. This is the album closer, 'Part IX'.

Another album that features trumpeter Harry Beckett, with Geoff Castle electric piano, Ed Speight guitar, Derek Wadsworth trombone and John Webb drums.

Something from Charles Mingus this evening - 'The Shoes Of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers' from his 1972 album 'Let My Children Hear Music' (produced by Teo Macero). The music is great of course, but the title is even better.

'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' was written by Charles Mingus in memory of saxophonist Lester Young. First released in 1963, it has become something of a jazz standard. For her 1979 album 'Mingus', Joni Mitchell added lyrics and transformed an already beautiful song into something magical. The track features Wayne Shorter saxophone, Herbie Hancock electric piano, Jaco Pastorius bass and Peter Erskine drums.
