‘John McLaughlin’ from ‘Bitches Brew’ (1970), a track written by Miles, although he doesn’t actually play on it. Featuring McLaughlin on guitar of course, what is generally thought to be Chick Corea on electric piano (one of three keyboard players on the 'Bitches Brew' sessions), Bennie Maupin bass clarinet, Harvey Brooks bass and either Jack DeJohnette or Lenny White on drums (or maybe both, given producer/engineer Teo Macero’s practice of splicing different snippets together).

‘Every Tear From Every Eye’ from the 1978 album ‘Electric Guitarist, with David Sanborn alto saxophone, Patrice Rushen electric piano, Alphonso Johnson bass and Tony Smith drums. I love the picture of the young John on the cover with his business card – Johnny McLaughlin, Electric Guitarist. Railway Cuttings, Sunnyside, Yorkshire.

The late Donny Hathaway is quite rightly best-known as a singer on a par with Stevie, Marvin and the other greats of his era. His ability as a pianist is less celebrated, but he was a very fine player who could easily have made a career as a musician. This is the instrumental track ‘Valdez In The Country’ from his 1973 album ‘Extension Of A Man’, with Hathaway on electric piano, Cornell Dupree guitar, Keith Loving guitar, Willie Weeks bass, Ray Lucas drums and Ralph McDonald percussion.

‘Scene At The Open Air Market’ from the 1996 debut album ‘Sounds From the Thievery Hi Fi’ by Thievery Corporation (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton), staples of the late 90’s Ibiza chill-out compilation CD boom. Sure, it’s a fairly lightweight piece of fluff, but on a grey December morning it will do just fine.

‘Bernard’s Shuffle’ a 1998 track by Mr Scruff (Andrew Carthy)’ featuring Bernard Moss on flute. I’ve never known whether the title of the track referred to Moss or to legendary drummer Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie, who has employed the famous ‘Purdie Shuffle’ on so many of the sessions that he has played on since the mid-60's.
