Most of the articles written about the late Charlie Watts in the last couple of days will have mentioned his great love of jazz, but I suspect that few if any referenced the album that he made in 2000 with fellow drummer Jim Keltner. All nine tracks were named after drummers that Watts was inspired by in his early days on the drum stool – Shelly Manne, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Airto Moreira, Billy Higgins and Elvin Jones. This is ‘The Elvin Suite’, with Watts on drums of course, Keltner percussion, Keith Richards guitar, Emmanuel Sourdeix piano/programming, Philippe Chauveau programming of African voices/percussion, Remy Vignolo bass and Blondie Chaplin vocals.

This is ‘Airto’ from the Charlie Watts Jim Keltner Project, with Watts on drums, Keltner percussion, Vignolo bass, Chauveau keyboards/percussion, Sourdeix piano and all other instruments (bandoneon, strings, trombone, voices) programmed by Chauveau and Sourdeix.

Finally (and because this is where I first heard of the album), one of three remixes of ‘Airto’ by Modaji (the late Dominic Jacobson) that appeared on a 12” alongside another four remixes of the same track by Restless Soul (Phil Asher/Luke McCarty).

I’m getting more and more into Brazilian jazz over the last fews years (my interest initially sparked by Gilles Peterson’s excellent compilation albums) and this is the sort of stuff I really enjoy. I’m a relative jazz novice but it seems a pretty reliable signal that when Ron Carter is involved in a musical project it’s going to be worth a listen.
