I’ve just heard that Rick Laird passed away yesterday at the age of 80. Although he had a solid career before and after the band, he remains best-known as the rock-solid foundation that underpinned the pyrotechnic marvel that was the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This is ‘Sister Andrea’ from the 1973 live album ‘Between Nothingness And Eternity. John McLaughlin guitar, Jan Hammer keyboards, Jerry Goodman violin, Billy Cobham drums and Rick Laird bass.

I've been really busy and meaning to drop into this thread. Thanks a lot for that Tolliver track gjw!

For a recent small assignment I've been listening to less heralded bebop and hardbop drummers: Louis Hayes and Art Taylor in particular. It's been a delight.

That sounds an interesting assignment, dd. I’m familiar with Louis Hayes (I posted something of his a few months back), but have never heard of (or knowingly heard) Art Taylor and will have to check him out. Is it in relation to a piece that you are doing for The Wire?
