Fuller was a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers for five years in the early 60’s, and more than held his own with Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter as part of probably the strongest front-line trio to play under the Jazz Messengers banner. From the album ‘Kyoto’ recorded in 1964, this is his composition ‘The High Priest’, featuring Art Blakey drums, Cedar Walton piano, Reggie Workman bass, Hubbard trumpet, Shorter tenor saxophone and Fuller trombone.

Two albums I came across via the ‘Jazz Bastard’ podcast. Both very good.

I hadn't heard of Todd Sickafoose, Tony, but I've been listening to 'Tiny Resistors' this evening and have to agree that it's very good indeed. Thanks for highlighting it.

The Yussef Kamaal album has been a favourite of mine for a while now and you probably won't be surprised to hear that it's on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label. Since 'Black Focus' both Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams have released albums under their own names that are equally as good, and Dayes also recorded an album with Tom Misch last year that is worth you checking out.

This is 'Salaam' from keyboard-player Williams album 'The Return' (2018), with Pete Martin bass and Joshua McKenzie drums.

‘Odyssey’ from the Yussef Dayes Trio live album ‘Welcome To The Hills’ that was released earlier this year. Featuring Dayes on drums, Rocco Palladino (son of Pino) on bass and Charlie Stacey keyboards.

'Ulla / Trance' from the Steve Kuhn Trio's 1986 album 'Life's Magic', recorded live at the Village Vanguard in March of that year, with Kuhn on piano, Ron Carter bass and Al Foster drums. An appropriate venue given that the interplay of the three musicians here is on a par with the Bill Evans Trio at their finest.

‘Time To Go’ from Steve Kuhn’s self-titled 1971 album, with Billy Cobham drums, Ron Carter bass, Airto Moreira percussion, a string quarter arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland and Kuhn on electric piano and vocals. His voice is not the strongest to put it mildly, but there is an understated charm to this recording that I’ve always liked.

Steve Kuhn and Gary McFarland had worked together four years previously on ‘The October Suite’ from 1967. This is ‘Childhood Dreams’ with McFarland again on arranging/conducting duties, Kuhn piano, Ron Carter bass, Corky Hale harp and a small woodwind section. The album cover is an interesting one – McFarland in front with his black polo-neck and lit cigarette the very epitome of mid-60's cool, and Kuhn hovering over his left shoulder like a photo-bombing bank-manager played by Stephen Merchant.
