    Farewell Phil May

Lead singer of The Pretty Things, easily the hairiest band in the world in 1964. I wish I could find their TV debut on RSG... extraordinary.

    Here's what they played:

I can't allow this to be a nil response thread. One of the great sixties blues R'n'B bands, and despite continuing to gig for fifty years or so, oddly overlooked. RIP Mr May.

Agree. The Pretty Things should've been way, way bigger than they were.

Also in 1964, David Bowie (then Jones) formed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Men with Long Hair.

He later recorded Rosalyn on Pin Ups. Coincidence?

Who knows. The Pretties were the archetypal art school band in 64. You'd see Dave Taylor and Phil May lookalikes wandering around the Tate but hardly anywhere else, except maybe a blues club if there was one in your town (there wasn't in mine.) It was a huge validation of one's self-image for a sixteen-year-old.

Defecting Grey is pretty much a whole album in one song. It is a great track.
