Many are necessarily tied to a time, place or cause but a few transcend those factors, their passion never fades. Some Guthrie, early Dylan, and a few others. One that's lasted going on twenty five years for me, and is maybe more relevant now than it was when I first heard it in 1996, is Iris Dement's Wasteland of the Free. It's an indictment of our time that it still sounds as fresh and necessary today.
I like this performance too. Taken with a shaky camera in 2006 with Iris looking like a figure out of a Dorothea Lange photograph. Her pain and anger are incontestable.
